Used Audi A5 v A7???
Discussion
Posted the below in the Audi forum but may it's a question for here?
Just wondering if, in your experience, a used A7 would cost more to maintain and fix when stuff goes wrong than an A5 Sportback?
If I had roughly 16/17k to spend on an A5 Sportback 3.0 TDI [245], it seems I could have an A7 for the same money with pretty much the same miles etc [maybe a year or two older].
The A5 seems like a very sensible choice [my OH would be happy]. Is the A7 equally as sensible or could the general costs be a bunch higher?
Thanks smile

I can't really help, but I was looking at the exact same 2 options last night.
I came down on the side of the A7 - maybe a year older but you get at least a 3.0 whereas a lot of the A5s are 2.0, it's bigger, the interior's nicer and it's just generally slightly cooler. I started to get confused when I compared A7s and A8s... The hatch is pretty much essential for me though.

I’m biased as I have the A7 BiTdi however it does feel a lot more special than an A5, and it’s pretty rare in comparison.
The interior is much better, that hatch boot is really handy and even though it’s a few yrs old, I still get the odd compliment. The only extra costs would be tyres and brakes, cost me £1000 for four tyres (20”) and around £500 for brakes and pads fitted to the front.
It’s been 100% reliable, and perfect for the motorway cruise, lifetime average is 40.5mpg... not bad for 310bhp and weighing nearly 2000kgs. Plenty of punch to see off most hot hatches in comfort... as I said I’m biased but I don’t think you can go wrong with an A7.

I'd definitely want a 3.0, but like you said there isn't a vast choice of 3.0 A5 Sportback's. I'd potentially look at the A6 Avant too.I came down on the side of the A7 - maybe a year older but you get at least a 3.0 whereas a lot of the A5s are 2.0, it's bigger, the interior's nicer and it's just generally slightly cooler. Actually, my final choice will come down to whether I can fit it in my single garage. A5 will be fine, A6/7 not so sure!!

Ah yes, the BiTDi. Unfortunately my budget wouldn't stretch to one of them. I bet that does have some go!The interior is much better, that hatch boot is really handy and even though it’s a few yrs old, I still get the odd compliment. Think I need to do a bit of research on the S-Tronic [or whatever they are now called], see if they're still things to be worried about - a mate of mine had his gearbox replaced in his nearly new A6 a few years ago, all under warranty.

Sounds like the garage might make your decision for you. The C7 A6 is a very wide car so I'm assuming the A7 could be even wider as I think it's based on the A8? Either way - think the width of a range rover. A5 is a much narrower car. Actually, my final choice will come down to whether I can fit it in my single garage. A5 will be fine, A6/7 not so sure!!

We went down from a C7 A6 estate to a late B8.5 S4 a few years ago and the size was really noticeable - as in the S4 fit in the lines of a parking space on our road, the A6 never got close.

I was in a similar position up until a few weeks ago when I made a decision. For me however I was trying to decide between a 440/435d coupe and the 640d coupe, it is a similar story where for the similar age and similar/equivalent spec you can actually get a 6 series instead of a 4.
I went with the 6 coupe, quite a bit rarer, much much better interior, better comfort etc and at 45mpg average I'm assuming similar fuel costs.
The bigger cost differences however are I suspect when it comes to insurance, tyres, brakes and other consumables. I imagine the situation is similar between the A5 and A7.
