Looking at a auto golf 2005/2006 max budget £4000 any problems with the dsg box? Or anything else I should be looking for

The DSG boxes of this era suffer with issues so do your homework, I'd say look for a manual or find one that's had a rebuild.

Or go for the Focus in ST-3 form for me it's the better (handling & drivetrain wise) car & was the reason I bought one over the GTI.

Make sure it's had the DSG oil change on schedule, as per VW's service intervals. The mechatronic unit was prone to failing on these but I believe they're not too bad to fix now. Specialists out there can rebuild them for around £350.
