What to buy: BMW X5 (F15) or Ford Edge

Ok so a bit of a random comparison but the story is.

I own a 300c that is getting a bit tired and I’m almost in the position where I can replace it. The thing is I like less popular more bolder cars and quite fancied an SUV, hence the Ford Edge!

I like it’s bold looks, rarity on the road and that it’s got that American truck kind of styling, they have good road presence also. It is also a sensible price point, cheaper to run than the 300c and practical for using it for work (smaller journeys, big boot space).

The bad points of it are annoying the same as what I’ve never liked about my 300c, the rubbish interior. It’s typical American, black plasticky, slightly creaky, cheapish looking. Also the engine sounds a bit like a van! But that’s the price you pay for cheaper to run I guess.

I was almost set on an Edge until I realised I could get a 2014 3.0d x5 for similar money. These have everything, size, presence, nice interior but obviously they come with bmw running costs and I’ve been put off by some of the repair work lists people have put up of their x5s. Plus the general running costs I doubt would be much cheaper than my 300c? £300 tax and about 25-30mpg round town. I wanted to try to avoid all this again if possible.

Safe option is the C Class, nice looking car, modern interior, can get a 2016 model, £30 tax and 50mpg. Or the C Class coupes are coming into my price range now which I’m very drawn to.

4 series BMW is another option, coupe or saloon model. They just look a bit plain imo even with the carbon styling kit.

It’s hard picking something to replace my 300c, it still gets admiring looks 11 years later, it’s never let me down and the engine is still absolutely purring! I’ve just had enough of dated tech and high running costs.

Any advice? (Help me please!)

Te Edge is a good car & far from cheap inside especially if you go for a Vignale model:

Now a good compromise between the above & the X5 would be a Jeep Grand Cherokee they have nice interiors, come well spec'd & are a very good full size SUV:

Somewhere in the middle size wise & a car that's left field is the Infiniti QX50 ticks a lot of boxes they come with everything but the kitchen sink whilst having a better fit & finish than the BMW, whilst also having a good purchase price they are very reliable.

I’ve had my eye on both of those edges haha specially the vignale, just a touch out of my price range at the moment though the vignales.

I do like the summit though I hadn’t really considered Jeep and your right it’s a good compromise, interior looks pretty nice aswell. Only thing that I noticed reading the info is it’s the same engine as my 300c and therefore same tax band and fuel economy. It’s not a deal breaker but something I hope to avoid.

Then take a look at the Infiniti although they're similar in terms of tax but they're a nicer car imo.

Haha I know, I’m more focused on looks than practicality 🤪

I’ve always fancied an suv but I’ve always liked the idea of zipping about in a coupe aswell! Not enough money for both unfortunately.
