I'm picking up a new car later in the week from a major dealer and have a £4.5k balance to pay.
Has the dealer any reason to get moody if I want to settle up by credit card?

Possibly, due to CC charges, however one would assume that if it was an issue it would have been mentioned at some point when the order paperwork was being done.

We won't take anything more than £1000 (deposit) on a CC and ask for the final balance to be paid via a bank transfer.

Is that because you are no longer allowed to pass on credit card charges to the customer?

If he wont take it, just go elsewhere to buy another.

Pay say £100 on a card in the registered keepers to be's name, and the rest doesn't matter as if any issues you can claim back via section 75. Ideally all on CC though

A quick Google shows the merchant credit card charge around 0.5%, which would cost him £22.50.
Does that sound about right?

After a quick Google it appears up to 0.9% on CC's and up to 0.35% on debit card, we no longer accept debit cards either due to charges and haven't done for about 18 months now.

credit/debit card charges vary from retailer to retailer, it can depend on the merchant supplier, the volume the retailer does.

This. If they won't accept the 1% or less charge they're not worth bothering with.

In my recent experience, many dealers no longer accept major payment by CC for car sales. The limit varies but £1,000 appears to be the max. This is based on Honda, Ford, Mazda and BMW main dealers.

They all wanted the balance paid by bank transfer.

I had no issues at a Toyota main-dealer recently, paying the final £3.3k by credit card.

I paid £4,500 on a CC when I picked up my car last month. They didn't blink.

I dug out the order sheet.
Credit card is £500 max,
Cash is £250 max
Debit card is fine

Note to self.. Always read the small print.

as long as you get £100+ on a CC to get the section 75 protection

That gets me thinking about settling up a final PCP payment on card, with an interest free purchases offer, although by the end you'd still be paying for a 5 year old car.

We only take a max of 500 on any card, rest via bacs, £5000 cash if you must.
When the law changed regarding card charges, so did we, it does my nut in but I can understand why it changed.

The dealership I work for also don't take card payments over £500.
We sell an average of 75 cars a month, if for arguments sake said those cars sold for £5000 each and they were all paid for by credit/ debit cards then we'd be looking at fees of £45000 over the year just to take those payments based on average fee of 1% between credit and debit cards.
It just isn't justifiable any more unfortunately.

Why not just call them and ask?

Back in 2008 I paid over £20K to a BMW main dealer on a debit card.
