Buying an ex-rental
Discussion
Looking at buying a MY18 Jaguar f-type R.
I've already gone through the figures and such, which were ok but not the best, and obtained the VIN.
However I've not yet signed on the line to confirm purchase.
Turns out that the car was used as a rental for the first year, rented out about 25 times to both public and corp(s), covering about 7000 miles over 6 months. But when asking dealer if this was rented out, prior to obtaining the VIN, they stated "no".
So a bit pissed off that they've lied to me.
After the rental company, it went back JLR (refurb company), to bring it back to JLR spec for selling.
It's been serviced once so far.
If you were told it wasn't a rental and then found out it was, would you still be inclined to purchase the car, even though met your expectations and specifications?
Or would you leave it and wait for another?
I guess with the 2 year warranty, which is extendable, i shouldn't have to worry.
And if i didn't want anyone else to have used it before, then i should buy new.
Could i use this knowledge as a bargain angle to knock another amount off the price?

I rent cars out often, generally it gets drive along the motorway to a place of work, left there for a number of days and drive back. It’s not being used to do a track day in or anything. So if it was one of these types of car then I don’t think it would bother me.
On the other hand I was on a Land Rover experience day on Monday and asked the guy what happens to the cars once they were retired from the experience days. 6000 miles they are kept then head back to Solihull where they are inspected/refurbished new set of wheels & tyres and then go up for sale on the forecourt. Not sure I’d want a 80/90k Range Rover that’s done 6k at 4mph through water across rocks and trees.
Don’t buy a used white land/rangie!

I've never quite understood this image of rentals doing 90,000 rpm as they're driven up Snowden. Most people just want to go somewhere and then drop it off again.
Maybe I'm a weirdo but I drive any rental exactly the same as my own car. What would abusing it achieve?
If the condition is good and there's plenty of warranty then I wouldn't be bothered myself.

This and any car out there for sale that is 6-12m old will likely be ex rental anyway.Maybe I'm a weirdo but I drive any rental exactly the same as my own car. What would abusing it achieve?

I'd be more worried how the rental company has treated it.Maybe I'm a weirdo but I drive any rental exactly the same as my own car. What would abusing it achieve?

Having a friend who worked for Enterprise the staff are the worse offenders for 'getting a car to its destination..........'
Personally i wouldn't buy unless it was for a good price

I get where you are coming from but from experience of my friends and their rental habits they fall into three categories:Maybe I'm a weirdo but I drive any rental exactly the same as my own car. What would abusing it achieve?

1. Those that have decent performance biased cars, anything from an S3 to a Ferrari, never bother renting performance cars as they get that fix regularly so they just potter about in normal rentals.
2. Those that do not have performance biased cars but have no real interest in them, they just rent regular cars and potter about in them.
3. A Jag F Type R would be rented by the third group who aren't in 1 or 2 but have an interest / desire to experience a performance car and they rent stuff like this and thrash the life out of it.
I'd buy an ex rental car, I would not buy an ex rental performance car.

I think the fact that Jaguar had to 'refurbish' it so they could get shut of it tells you all you need to know.
I wouldn't buy a hire car that I'd hired, put it that way, unless it was very cheap!
People expect a higher quality of car approved used from a dealer, than that of a private sale.I wouldn't buy a hire car that I'd hired, put it that way, unless it was very cheap!
Clearly, it's not the owners that are the difference - it's that when it's traded in, money is spent on prep reconditioning the car, smart repairing scuffs, PDR, wheel refurbs etc.

Agreed. People didn’t rent an F type R to pootle from Heathrow airport to a meeting in Swindon and back the next day.
They rented it to drive it hard IMO.
The fact the dealer lied to you would be a deal breaker for me. Can’t stand handing money to people I don’t trust.

Wouldn't something of that level be gone over with a fine tooth comb every time it came back in? And in this day and age you're not going to find too many places to thrash anything anywhere unless you have a spare airfield. I'd buy an ex rental car, I would not buy an ex rental performance car.
I can imagine at worst there'll be some bursts of acceleration. The rest of the time you're posing.
But as above, the lying would annoy me more than anything else.

I did quite a few of the VXR track days (that I think are gone now
)
All of the cars were brand new VXRs that spent a couple of weekends being hammered round tracks all day long, getting covered in rubber etc, before ending up on a dealer forecourt as a "low mileage demonstrator" on it's 10th set of tyres...
It was ironic as (not that I was in a position to do so) while it sold the cars it really put me off buying one from them!
I've got a rental at the moment as my car is in for repairs, I'm treating it better than mine, I always treat other peoples property well, although I'm not alone in that mind set, there aren't that many people that would want to or take enjoyment out of abusing a rental car.

Its a 500 bhp high end sports car, how hard can you "Thrash" it before you are doing 150 mph and are getting nicked, half throttle has you going way faster than speed limits. Also, having an auto box it protects the engine a bit as they tend to change up and not buzz engines as readily, plus it has a rev limiter, not sure if told how to ruin an F type R, I would go about it, guessing an electronic handbrake so no handbrake turns ? burnouts I bet it will do all day but a bill for £500 on rear tyres will put most off.
Some private owners treat cars like crap as well, being a rental doesnt guarantee it got battered, a lot want to not damage it as they know they will get hammered and have to pay for any damage there and then, also worried stuff may be getting logged somehow.
Every car has some remedial work after return, before going on sale, dealers have a standard process, may just need a valet or may need the odd smart repair or wheel refurb, its a used car.
Its a well built car and will have a guarantee, it will be fine, or certainly no worse than a private one with the same miles.

Same here - I don't want some massive bill for damaging it, and neither do I abuse other people's property. Just as the F tyoe *may* have been abused by *one* of the renters, buying a private car is as fraught with risk as they *may* have abused it *all* it's life.
As to the person above who reckons it will have been rented to be "driven hard" - really? I'd say most people in the position to be renting one will be at intelligent and responsible, no some adenoidal Troy Queef wannabee trying to hang the arse out on roundabouts and correcting it with a dab of oppo.
Buying an ex rental car wouldn’t bother me at all .. nor seemingly does it bother most people
Places like motorpoint sell virtually nothing but ex rental cars
I’ve bought a few and had absolutely no issues with them
I even bought an ex press office BMW from a BMW main dealer as an approved car ... it was perfect for the 4.5 years I had it
Both my wife and I regularly rent cars .. usually from airports both in the U.K. and abroad and treat them completely normally
However, having said all that I wouldn’t buy certain types of high performance car from a “ back street “ rental company
High end cars from prestige rental companies are one thing .. those rented to a certain demographic by back street companies are another entirely
So yes .. a Range Rover from Hertz but NO to an R8 from *******Cars innit Brov.com

That's what I was thinking - a Fiesta or a Corsa rental may get taken to the redline everywhere by some, but you'd be hard pushed to do the same to an F-type R. I'd use it as a bargaining aid but on balance it wouldn't bother me much.
