Hi,

I've been toying with the idea of selling the Aston for a while now and replacing it with something with a bit more of a "future classic" status.

Why do I not see the Vantage as a future classic? Simply, they were too many made.

The comparison I often get to that comment is the DB7 which dropped like a stone in value and is now greatly on the up. But again, the number of Vantages far outstrip the DB7.

Looking at "How Many Left" 2018 numbers:
- V8V V8 = 4,500
- DB7 - 1,500

The immediate other idea was a Audi R8. There are roughly 1,500 of those. But, I struggle shifting from the luxury of the Aston to the "common-ness" of an Audi, in particular the interior of the R8 which is plan dull. They also seem to not be doing well price-wise at the moment.

So what else?

Sports car (or similar)

I live in London which means paying £12.50 daily for the ULEZ in a couple of years. The Aston is exempt, as is the Audi. But other things are not.

Every petrol car from 2005 on will be ULEZ compliant, some were compliant before this.

Or the car needs to be pre 1979 and preferably not rust, nor leak like a sieve whilst living outside

Also, it needs to live outside.

- Porsche 964
Not ULEZ exempt. Maybe a bit too old?

- Porsche 997.2. C2 Manual
I wonder if its a little dull? Also, prices have risen, but still not a bad shout. Just doesn't excite as much as the Aston.

- Morgan Aero 8
Too noisy in the cabin. It needs to be used as a tourer. Also, it might leak!

Be grateful for other thoughts and considerations. Or just to tell me that i am plain wrong!

Budget £~40k

Cheers
R

i can only see v10 manual R8s becoming more desirable, or even the V8s

The V8V's too common, but a 997.2 is on the list?

As above though, a good manual V10 R8, or a well-specced Gallardo would be fairly depreciation-proof. No mention of budget, but I assume a V12V is out of the question?

Not sure I can help, although reading between the lines it sounds like you want to keep the Aston.

To be exempt, correct me if I'm wrong, the car needs to be 40 years old, or older?

Not sure what your budget would be, but you could look at something from the 70's?

Or this which is a little more expensive, but would fly under the radar:

OP thinks going from an Aston to an R8 is a step down... going for a Z4 is like a leap down into the dungeon.

How about a Maserati Grantourismo? They seem to be pretty rare and should certainly tick the "special" box.

Last of the "Ferrari-engined Maserati GT cars".

For £40k I'd be waiting for a Maserati Gransport Spyder to come onto the market. One was listed on here earlier this week for £42k and has gone already. Should be fine outside.

I've done that exact same move once and sorely tempted to do so again hehe

On a more relevant note, I've also got the urge for an Esprit Turbo and i'd imagine that would tick all the OP's boxes.

I think you have just got used to the Aston, put it away in a lockup for a few weeks and drive something ordinary and then get the Aston back out and feel the WOW factor again!

I would say whilst you're correct on the numbers side of things, well looked after ones will maintain a premium into the future.

About 8 years I walked away from an NSX because they wouldn't accept £9,600 (high miles, poor condition and no main dealer SH For years). I'd say the same condition car today would set me back £40,000. Same thing could happen with the AMV8 as the really bad ones disappear and the better ones have their own market.

How about a Roadster? Quite a bit rarer. This one seems like a bargain; a Prodrive one with manual gearbox in 'classic' AM colour:

I'd probably fit the wheels and sideskirts from a V12 S to and you have a car that looks like one for sale at £100k.

Budget now updated in OP as well as the need for it to be a sports car. Those are lovely cars, especially the Daimler. Beautiful.

Hahaha. Probably a little true.

I owned a Masser 4200, and drove a few Gransports. In my opinion its an inferior car to the Aston. On the future classic part, i can see where you are coming from on rarity. However, at present the Coupe Gransports are dropping in value, effected by the Granturismo prices. I wonder as the Grancabrio prices drop what will happen to the Gransport Spyders.
I'm also not sure if the Gransport Coupe's fixed the horrendous scuttle shake from the earlier Spyders.

OP I agree with you about the Aston V8 Vantage.

Usually it's the first and last of the line that are worth the most. I think the Jaguar XK is a very handsome car - more so than the F-type that followed and a late XKR-S would meet many of your criteria.

Could you park outside the zone and rent a garage?

That would involve paid for storage, and then I'd rarely ever see the car.

Guess it depends on how often you are willing to travel outside the ULEZ to go for a ride. Do you drive much inside the current zone?

I do get what you mean, though. It's the convenience of having the car either on your drive or at least outside your house.

Driving in the zone is basically driving to my house - so I don't really drive in the zone. But for a weekend away it would mean packing one car/taxi with all our luggage and "stuff", unpacking it at the storage place, and then re-packing it all. Sounds like much faff.

Also, most the storage places are further than a taxi ride, so it might be a decent length journey in the wrong direction to get the car.

I'd say the C6 Z06 is a definite modern classic, it's an epic drivers car whilst the interior may not be upto Aston standards but they're still a nice place to be.
