At an absolute mind block can't think, just sold my DC2 and moved house and little one expected in less than a month, just going to be a temporary car until I saved up abit again.

Budget up to 2k ideally like to pay less
Must be reliable that's a real key
Do better than the 17mpg I'm getting out of my dad's forester
Petrol or diesel not fussy
Would like to chuck my bike in the back so saloon with folding seats is ok.

Only options I can think of at the moment is a E46 320/330 touring, and a Mondeo 2007 ISH, a few titantuim X's for sale so DAB, heated seats etc.

What about a Saab 9-3 Aero? You could get the Coupe/5 door original hatch that’s been well sorted (yes, they have ISOFIX) for that budget and not lose a packet, or the newer Saloon version (not sure about folding seats mind you). In 2.0 Aero form, they’re plenty jock enough, built like granite for little ones safety, and easily (and cheaply) tweaked. No real issues mechanically either. They’res also the bigger 9-5 Aero if you want something a bit bigger and a bit faster.

To be fair, I’m biased as I’m on my 5th Saab!

Go with the Mondeo.

Practical, good kit, good to drive, cheap to run. It's what I did when I needed a cheap car to do big miles for a few months and never regretted it. Definitely go petrol though would be my advice, especially if the MPG target is 17 or better.

If it's just temporary then a 3rd Gen CRV will probably tick all your boxes. A decent enough drive and reasonable kit. At that budget Honda and Toyota are probably the safest bets reliability wise. Space wise, with the rear seats down it's almost a van. The rear seats slide forwards and backs as well which is handy for prioritising boot vs rear leg room depending on what you are doing. Decent ground clearance and it uses a dual pump AWD system (better than the newer 4th gen) so gives you scope for light off-roading if seeking out bike trails.

Something like this, which looks like it's had an aftermarket Sony double din fitted which will be a good thing. It also has a very clean MOT history.

Alternately if you want petrol then the Grand Vitara is decent enough and very reliable (avoid their diesels though).

Volvo S60, all petrols are turbo and reasonably quick. T5 fast if you can find one. Think the seats fold.

Not the sharpest drive but Golf mk4 V6 4 motion drop to 2k Mark or sometimes find VW Passat 2.0Tsi at this price with Golf Gti engine
