Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unreliable as people make out?
Discussion
I was looking at an X5 but have been mildly put off reading horror stories about them being targeted for thefts, often involving late night house hunts for your keys!
Anyway I looked more seriously at Grand Cherokee and have found a nice 2016 75th anniversary model in my budget. They appeal to me because they have the spec to match the more expensive X5s (adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise etc).
I read a thread on here from owners who absolutely love them, but a wider google search seems to bring stories of pain and repair bills, they seem pretty hit and miss.
Does anyone have a good knowledge of these cars?

My step had has had 3 in the 5-6 years ive known him.
A 3.6 petrol
An SRT8
And now a Trackhawk
He loves them and all 3 have been remarkably reliable, especially when compared to something with similar performance.
No major borkage springs to mind.
ETA, the first Trackhawk he had went back within a week because an EML came on.
P.s. he has done circa 20000 miles per year in each of them.

We replaced car our 2012 XC60 with a 2014 GC Overland diesel. Bought it with 8k on the clock, sold it in January this year with 29,000 miles. Bar servicing, we had to replace a faulty DRL but that was covered by warranty. It spent most of its life commuting to and from the railway station with MrsB. but did Scotland and back twice a year fully loaded, and Cornwall and back twice a year, loaded up a bit more. Engine wasn’t as smooth as my brother in law’s X5, and arguably the tech on board is probably a generation behind everyone else (if that’s important to you), but in terms of being a proper big off roader with luxury and comfort, there isn’t anything out there to touch them for the money in my opinion.
Coped with driving rain, snow, sand and everything we threw at it. We’d have bought another but for the fact we were downsizing. Still miss it!

Tech in a car is pretty important to me as I’ve just coming from a pretty dated car.Coped with driving rain, snow, sand and everything we threw at it. We’d have bought another but for the fact we were downsizing. Still miss it!
How come you think it’s a generation behind? Just the way it feels/operates? One of the things I liked about the Jeep is you could get a 2016 model with plenty of toys for the same price as a more moderately specced 2014 X5.
It’s all the same stuff such as adaptive cruise, air suspension, adaptive headlights, 8.4” infotainment and the obvious heated/cooled seats, climate etc.
I’m wary of being stuck in a dated car in 5 years time again though.
