Looking around for a replacement car - seen a few of these around.

2008 1.8 with 80k on the clock seems like a good buy at £2k, but what do I know? Any input?

I’ve never been in one, but I imagine they are awful in every way.

Yeah, a bit like the Spice Girls.

Awful, every one of these I have ever sold has haunted me.
Ended up buying the same one back due to rejection 3 times.
Roof mechanism is over complicated and put together by Vauxhall, although I believe it is a Mercedes rip off/copy.
Terrible in every way possible.

So a good car then!

That generation of Astra wasn't great at the best of times. I would imagine adding a folding hard top into the mix does not help matters.

I'd avoid anything of that age with a folding roof like that; Eos, Megane, 308, TwinTop, there is just so much to go wrong, all it needs is a micro switch or sensor to have a moment and you are fked.

Girlfriends mum has one. It’s terrible.

For one, it’s massive and with poor visibility it makes it a nightmare to park. Then everything creaks cracks and rattled due to the flex. The door seals leak like a sieve and her roof got stuck part open a few years ago. Basically one of the wires for the roof mech had rubbed through its insulation and shorted out the system. Roof had to be manually wound with a special tool from Vauxhall and the whole loom replaced. Wasn’t cheap even done at an Indy rather than main dealer.

That plus the 3-series hard-top. My mate's 335i, owned and cossetted from new, had to be recovered with the roof jammed half-open when 3-4 years old.

If you want a £2k convertible, get a Saab or Audi

Or a 205 cj for similar levels of refinement and manliness.

I'd counter somewhat to the 'they are all awful' comment, the wife has a 10 year old 307cc that we paid £1500 for and its been 100% reliable in 2 years and 60k miles, the roof works without fail, its bone dry inside and is a nice place to sit and it cruises very comfortably with the roof down at 80mph, its also not bad to drive at all really for what it is, there is no scuttle shake or chassis flexing and its quiet and economical averaging 50mpg, it has required very little maintenance apart from servicing and the obligatory DMF/clutch replacement at 70k miles, she couldn't be happier with it.

So they aren't all bad, sure they are not a drivers car but for simple roof down fun for 4 people they make a lot of sense, and if it breaks it doesn't really matter, I'll just buy another one.

Wife was about to drop the hammer on one when I asked the chap to run the roof open and closed once more. It stuck halfway. It was very funny although my wife tore strips off the seller for obvious reasons.
Wouldnt touch one with a very long barge pole.

Interestingly, there's a Saab convertible - 58 plate - for sale up the road. Don't know what price he's asking though.

Are they ok?

My niece has one. I've never seen the top down. It's an astra. So mechanically every back street garage knows the score and how to fix one.

It sounds like an enlarged photocopy of my mum's Tigra then, with all the same issues hehe

I've had a 2005 Saab 'vert for three years and it has been great. In my possession its had very few problems, and those that have occurred were very cheap to repair (just spent a whole £5 having the electric window switch fixed after it got a bit temperamental)
You can also get the petrol ones remapped cheap. Mine went from 150hp to 220hp for £95.
