Family Car 15K budget - Page 1 - Car Buying

What would you buy with 15K? And which will do me 5 years. I will be taking out a loan as my mileage too high for most PCP’s - around 13K per year, mostly motorway driving during the week.

Currently have a Volvo V50 which needs replacing, so am used to a bigger car. Needs to be petrol & manual.

Any suggestions?

Cheers! Had been thinking about the Leon (in petrol) - but 2008 too small & 3008 above budget - and French ;-)

Get yourself a kia at 2 years old max and you'll be driving it under warranty for 5-7 years depending how old the car is.

Keep it serviced on time and any oroblems should be taken care of. We've hd our rio now from 6 months old. Runs out of warranty in September after 7 years trouble free motoring yes stuff has gone wrong but it's all been covered under warranty nd alwys have a courtesy car when it goes in.

Not the most exciting to drive but will be a decent family car and usually loaded with toys if you opt for the 3 or 4 spec.

If you're not buying on dealer finance, would a 2-3 year old car not be worth considering?

You'll get a nicer car, and lose less on depreciation.

ETA in similar situation bought a 3 year old Rav4 Invincible for my girlfriend 18 months ago, has been faultless. Can't remember how much it was, perhaps £13,200...

Serious question, why does the Volvo have to go....

Currently less than £600 spent keeping my old Rover 75 on the road, two and a half years and 40000 miles after my father in law was offered £250 in part ex!

I get you might want a new car, however nothing like an old reliable banger IMO..148,000 and going strong!

A Kia might not be a bad shout.

Am hoping to get a car that’s a year or two old, with less than 10K miles. The cars I really like (V60, Seat Ateca) are above budget.

The V50 is 8 years old with 90K miles on it; I use it for work (community NHS) and cant do my job without it, so needs to be ultra-reliable. Spent about 1K getting the Volvo through service/MOT & I’ve got suspicions about the electrics (faulty temperature gage)

I think my next family car will probably be a Kia Sportage and I would never have said that even a month ago, I was dead against SUV type cars of any type maintaining I'd stick with estates for family duties.

What changed my mind was a work trip abroad where one was supplied as a hire car by the company I work for being used for four adults and substantial luggage. Three of us being 6ft and over we found the seating position to be very good even for rear seat passengers which I often find a struggle on a normal estate unless its a big one. Boot size was also very good and it was very well equipped inside and comfy over prolonged use.

I wouldn't have one as my sole car because there is very little driver involvement if any but as an overall family wagon it makes a lot of sense and in my opinion still better than a MPV type vehicle.
