Nissan - reliability
Discussion
Hi all
Looking at potentially getting a Nissan Navara but reliability is a core consideration. I had an X-Trail brand new in 2006 that was a death trap and had to give it back but lost the VAT money. I vowed never to return to the brand.
I have read stories of the many problems of the previous Navara, including chassis snapping in half and do on.
Would I be wise to steer clear?

I've read on PH horror stories with new X-trails and Qashqai's (1.6 petrol?) which have inherited catastrophic problems resulting in new engines and Nissan completely refusing to fix it under warranty.
I'd never hand a penny to Nissan personally.

Aren't they owned by Renault now? I don't know many with a Renault but the one I do know has a 17 plate Clio bought in 2018 with 13k miles on. It needed new pads and disks at the front (NSF pads worn out), a software update, minor suspension work, subsequent tracking and an OSF tyre. Seemed quite a lot for the age of the vehicle. The only person I know with a Nissan has a 2012 Joke that goes to the shops and back and that's it, no need to take it on the school run as the school is on the same road. Can't say he's ever had it into a garage other than an MOT but he's mechanically minded so may do some easier work himself.
Renaults my family have owned in the past have all ended in disaster too, albeit mid 2000's vehicles. I don't want to stick to the "French is rubbish" stereotype but I can see where that stereotype came from.

Pretty much every car released has recalls of some description. Most modern cars are very well stress tested they don't tend to just fall apart unless the owner has done something completely daft. My parents have been driving a 12 plate Qashqai for 4 years no problems at all. I had a 350z, all fine there too no signs of it killing me or anything. If there were daily reports of Nissans falling to pieces I would be worried, but there isn't.
Theres so many known gearbox and engine issues, where they are failing on ludicrously low mileage but are being refused under warranty, with Nissan refusing to admit theres a problem with them. Theres also the chassis issue on the navara, which is downright dangerous.
I wouldn't put my own money into one given they just don't want to address the issues.
Yes, buy a Toyota!!

For reliability consider the Isuzu D-Max.
If you do steer clear of a Nissan and get a Toyota, do go easy on the steering - https://teknikensvarld.se/the-new-toyota-hilux-clo...

Ha, thanks everyone. Nothing here to convince me of Nissan, just as I thought.
Have heard great things about Isuzu but put off by the DMax small 1.9 engine and slight agricultural feel.
I'm thinking it's between the Ranger and Amorok. Not personally convinced with the Hilux given I want a pick up that is more road biased.
Thanks again.

It’s got me rethinking now about next years replacement.
We’ve had a 2014 Juke the last two years from the Nissan main dealer, no real issues bar the stereo playing up twice (all fixed under the extended warranty that’s up next year) apparently it’s £5k for a new satnav!!! £5k!!! That’s just bonkers. Annoying because I’ve got everything here to fit a full system but can’t touch it or it’ll void the warranty.
I was thinking of a new Quashquai or if we can stretch to it the Xtrail next year but not sure now. The warranty’s up in 12 months so wanted shot just as it ran out.
Nissan Cardiff have been excellent to deal with, but not sure I want to dump £20-25k on a new Nissan if it’ll be back & forward getting repaired!

According to the AA they go to far fewer Nissan vehicle breakdowns than any other manufacturer.
I find that unlikely. I'm sure they've been to more Nissan breakdowns than Bugatti. Can I ask where you got that information from though? It sounds like an interesting read.I read the information on the AA review website last year.

Given the most common call out issue for breakdown providers is the battery being flat or depleted its hard to base reliability of a manufacturer on the number of call outs.I read the information on the AA review website last year.
