Evening all,

Had a e92 M3 until recently. Bought a C350cdi Estate for family duties but really don’t like it (more truthfully I want to be in something special again).

Can muster up c£22,500 comfortably so considering a MY05 911C2S - never driven one.

Or a Maserati GT but for that budget it’ll only be the 4.2. Haven’t driven one but a friend has one. M3 was quicker and more engaging in all ways according to him. Am worried about it being not that focused.

Left field option(s) are C63 Estate W204 but am put off by the gearbox being less than great especially in comparison to the DCT in the M3.

Or a e61 M5 but SMG etc etc AND I fear I’d be resentful of the estate premium. Paying c£10,000 for the privilege of having the rare Estate.

Or any other suggestions please smile

So are you after a 2 seat impractical sportscar or a 5 seat practical estate? I'm confused..

The GT would be my pick out of the two but only one that has had the Cam Variator fix carried (if it's been done by a reputable Indy it'll be on Maserati's register) out.

They're very different cars so I'd say a test drive both to see which suits you best, in all honesty I'd actually be going for a Gransport if it has to be a coupe, I rate these as a better car than the GT at your price point.

But here's the curveball with your budget you can land a very nice 4.7 Quattroporte (with the ZF Auto) which if you're looking for a Maserati this is the one to buy at your price point:

It doesn't really matter.

I have an 20 month old but the wife has a car that suits this requirement.

A fast / special estate would be a bonus so when we do do the long journeys I can use my car. (She NEVER cleans her car(s), never has fuel in it and shes just made the desision to go from an X5 to a Golf with a less than inspiring drive).

Previously the M3 was difficult for family duties so we ended up using my wife X5.

Thank you very much for sending these smile

I love the look of the GS but I just can't see myself owning one. The GT however whilst not gigantically modern it's in a different league to the GS.

In the same vein I think I'd prefer a M5 over the Maser Q.

Whilst the M5 is better & faster it doesn't have that specialness (that you can't put your finger on) that the Maserati has, the funny thing is F10 M5's have depreciated harder than the Maserati who'd have thought that would happen.

I’ve had a e92 m3 comp,2016 Rs6, 964 c2s and and now on a 2005 C2S. It’s my fav. Feels special. I spent a bit more (£29k) and got one from 911V that had been loved and fully cleared of issues. I vote 911 (but do the checks first esp at that price)

Edit - has to be manual

I’m very surprised by the prices of the F10 M5’s. I’ve been in a few, most memorable was Evolves old white one at Terminal Velocity doing 193mph.

I test drove a manual 911 C2S today. Wasn’t able to push on as the owner was with me but it certainly felt special. This one had winters on which was the reason a deposit wasn’t left but it was lovely. Didn’t feel as fast as the M3 but it’s not all about that.

Has anyone an opinion on the W204 C63?

Great cars my OH still misses her one, it was faultless & went like stink it felt special but not quite as special as my CLK63 which is why I still have the CLK but you won't be disappointed with the C63 especially after you remap it.

So, it won't be until September but I will have c£30,000 to spend on one of the above.

Can any owners give me their honest thoughts please smile

This depends a lot on what is your driving style, average journey and roads availability?

Do you want something a bit more nimble to throw round the short and twisties now and again or is it a rapid point to point car?

You have ruled out the need for a "practical" car as your wife has one to tick that box, so you make sure you get what you really want not a half way house!

I personally would be going for the Porsche, I find the Maserati's (and bear in mind I want a 5th generation Quattroporte a lot) much more of a grand tourer.

There are plenty of 911s to be had and they have excellent residuals, there are 2 areas to watch out for and that is bore scoring and that the IMS bearing has been replaced. Most cars have now had these issues attended to as checks / preventative maintenance but worth checking. I've never got in a car as much as a 911 that makes any trip feel special the second I sat in it, I find them to be remarkably practical and also in proportion good in fuel. If budget stretches you want to be aiming for a later 997 or early 997.2, buying from a main dealer is not necessary as long as you do your research - no more or less so than for any of these cars!

To me cars like the C/E63, M3, M5, RS4, RS6 etc are all compromises. They are practical and they are fast but at the end of the day they are rep mobiles/executive cruisers that have been stripped down, rebuilt and repurposed with better bits by an in-house team of SAS engineers. I've not driven them all but have driven various AMG, M and RS cars from recent years and none of them ever feel as much like a sports car as a 911 does.

The trade off is that it's not that practical. The "frunk" doesn't hold much and I'm not sure what a baby seat would be like in one, my kids (7&8) are perfectly happy in the back in booster seats so there does seem to be a sweet spot where it can work as a useable family car (just don't plan any camping trips 4 up in one). Mine is only a lowly 996 C4 and despite the fact I have had more modern cars with more power the 996 manages to impress. No one part of the car dominates the driving experience, it's like an orchestra where every part is working together to create a complete experience.

So I say get a 911. The newest 997 you can afford but if speed matters then don't over look a 996 turbo.

Thanks for the replies.

I've put myself off the idea of a C63 or similar. The M3 was a great car but as you say a car that has been turned into something it wasn't originally designed to be.

The Maserati has been something on my wish list for years BUT turned off by the GT factor.

I'm lucky enough to have a very short drive to work (1.7miles, but have to have a car at work) so I want something to feel special for the weekends. Also lucky to live in Wokingham and have some great driving roads locally in and around Henley, Didcot, Oxfordshire and the like.
