Advice on buying a used car

Hello,
after driving for three years the antediluvian Yaris i bought cash saying "it has just to last for a year", I am looking to buy something newish.
I have a 15 miles commute that combines a bit of motorway and some quite bad cheshire country roads, and about once a month I have a long motorway trip with loads of luggage. Last year I did 12k, and I expect to do a bit more next year.
I need something a little bit bigger than the Yars, as my longsword does not actually fit in the back hatch and I have to flex it to slid it in (I do historical fencing as a hobby), but, more importantly, I would like something a bit more fun to drive, spending strictly less than 10k, and possibly 7k.
I do not need/want something fast right now, just something that does not make me wonder "what are my wheels doing right now?" when I try to get out of a bend accelerating, and that does not feel asthmatic when going uphill with a passenger and camping equipment.
The car I drove longest and loved the most was a 2003 Ford Focus MkI TDCi, and I just loved how I could look at people slowing down in bends or on wet asphalt, think "ha, losers", give more gas and overtake them.
I had been considering until now a Seat Leon ST, or a Mazda3, until I noticed that a Giulietta can cost less than both of them.
Any suggestions, or remarks about what I might not have considered?
