Will be in the market for a replacement car soon, and I've decided to return to shedding as opposed to take out yet another PCH lease.

I'd like to stick to £1,500 and have been keeping an eye on what comes up locally in that price range. I don't fancy a tiny Micra/Yaris etc., and most of the Mk1 Ford Focus for sale which is so often recommended on here seem to have half rusted away or be in a pretty poor condition.

Anyway, I've come across the Citroen C5. It appeals because it's a bit different, although not to the extent of some Citroens. I find the roads in the south east pretty terrible, so the hydropneumatic suspension sounds wonderful. It's also a larger car, which I prefer and I even quite like the way it looks!

Specifically, I'd be looking at a 2002-2007 Mark 1 (pre or post facelift) with the 2.0 HDi engine. I notice the earlier cars are 110 and later 140PS. Most of the cars have the 140PS engine; does this have more problems than the 110? I know to avoid the 1.6 HDi!

Is auto or manual the way to go with these, from a reliability point of view?

Supremly comfortable machines, try to go for the facelifted varian (post 2005 I believe). HDI engines are pretty good and reliable, auto boxes may be a weak spot.
One of the ost underrated cars, especially as an estate it is a well kept secret and makes a good shed choice.

The generation after is also amazing.

Also take a look at the Laguna, you'll get a very nice MK2 for your budget:

Or there's always the 607:

Crikey, I never knew the 407 had the same hydropneumatic suspension as the C5! You learn something new every day smile

Unless I need to learn more about sarcasm, I dont think you have.

Hydro suspension is Citroen only, not all versions of the C5 have it so maybe a regular sprung version would match a 407SW.

Would be great if more cars used HP suspension though.

Not sure how the new suspension offered by Citroen this year in the new Cactus compares with HP.

Ran a 2004 pre-facelift 2.0 HDI 110 LX for a couple of years from new, sold it to family friends when PCP was up and they ran it for a good 4 years after that. Found it comfortable, pretty reliable (one or two small electrical niggles), economical and very practical indeed.

Hydropneumatic suspension faultless and very handy in floods and fords! From memory needs a thorough refresh at 125k miles though so check that's been done.

Always fancied an Exclusive, the leather armchairs looked squishy and lovely smile
