Petrol OR Diesel for 2019 onwards????

Hi Guys,
I have owned Diesel cars for the past 10 years as we see they are great for around town economy and offer very low car tax prices generally, though some Diesel 4x4's like my 2006 Kia Sorento is £315 per year.
Now they are discouraging buying Diesels because of the environment and green issues, or are these just rumours? What do we go for???
The car I want to buy is a Citroen C4 as it is cheaper than a Focus, is the same size and appears excellent value for money with great engines, a smooth drive, and very good equipment levels. I was struggling to find the right Diesel at my budget so looked to the petrol engine, just for the record, I believe the Diesel 1.6 HDI can be as low as £30 per year. I then found a beautiful condition immaculate FSH low millage one, I was over the moon as it was only a 1.6 petrol engine so the tax has to be reasonable???..right??? No, it was £235 per year!!! which I think is outrageous for a smallish 1.6 car! Fuel consumption between the 1.6 Diesel vs petrol around town, who knows??? So the uncertainty stopped me in my tracks and scared me off from venturing back to petrol.
Further more, this car i'm 'attempting' to buy is a car for my job, I will be doing local house calls all day every day.
Any ideas Guys as im lost....They seem to charge ANYTHING they like for car tax, even down to different trim levels, its totally outrageous!

Yes, I think £300 is a lot per year, when the same car with a different engine is £30 per year! Like the one I mentioned, Citroen c4 2007 1.6 hdi around £30 then the same size engine in petrol £235, is it only me that thinks they take the ***?

With you doing short journeys everyday all day you'll want a petrol or hybrid, more modern diesels do not like lots of stop start short journey driving. Also that 1.6hdi engines are not the best in terms of reliability.
Tax is based on C02 emissions which means a 1.6 N/A engine will be higher road tax if you go for a more modern turbo petrol the tax is a bit more sensible, if you can stretch your budget then an Alfa Giulietta 1.4T with a nice spec & £145 Tax.
