MK6 GOLF R ADVICE
Discussion
I have about 14K for my next car and looking into a MK6 Golf R, with DSG.
This will get me a 10/11 plate with about 60-70,000 miles. Does anyone have any experience with these cars? Anything to look out for? Anything to avoid?
Are they worth the premium? They must be holding their value for a reason??
Ive always had FWD and would love the traction of 4WD.
For roughly the same price i could get a 11/12 plate S3 with 50,000 miles or a 12/13 plate Golf GTI with 40,000 miles?
Thoughts/opinions please!!

I've kept my eye on these for some time as a potential future upgrade from my current car (mk5 GTI). I think they hold their value well for several reasons. Rarity - much less common than the mk7R, perhaps even less common than the mk5 R32.
The general consensus seems to be they are very reliable. Rather than using the potentially unreliable EA888 (see:timing chain tensioner failure) engine found in the mk6 GTI it uses an engine very similar to the mk5 gti ED30, the last of the EA113 engines.I think the S3 8P uses the same. These engines are known to be strong. The newest EA888s in mk7Rs are getting a bit of a reputation for a weak turbocharger if pushed past stock.
They all seem to be specced nicely too, leather, xenon's etc - not sure if this was all standard. Compared to the cheapest mk7s which perhaps are in budget for you too, I think the mk6 will usually be a nicer place to sit. And those rear lights
A red 3 door manual mk6 R would be my choice, if given the chance! Never so much as been in one, but they are certainly a tempting proposition on paper! I think I'd prefer a stage 1 Mk6R over the Mk7R...
Tried looking on howmanyleft to see numbers of registrations. Looks like:
mk6 R ~600
mk7 R~6000+
mk5 R32 ~5000
S3 8Ps ~2000

Definitely highlighted the reasons I’m looking at it. Do you think one would be worth spending 14K even with 60/70,000 miles? The general consensus seems to be they are very reliable.
