Buying a car around £6000, FN2 Type R catching my eye....
Discussion
Need something not too ridiculous but also fun and reliable, first proper car coming from a 1.2 16v 08 Clio so anything is a step up really.
What would you all suggest? I want something with decent space that will be reliable but also fun, FN2 Type R catching my eye for VTEC sound and good reliability and will go look at one this weekend so any advice is appreciated, getting quoted £1400 for insurance which is doable for me if I'm spending around 5k on the car,
Open to alternatives! Give me some advice!
Is the fn2 LSD models worth it for 2k£+ more? I don't think it will be for me but wanted to get other opinions
Thanks

I quite like the interior and exterior styling on the FN2 + it's newer and safer so insurance is less, what draws me to VTEC is the idea of a normal car at low revs which is very manageable and then when you want to push it you get all the power you need and an engine screaming to match
FN2 is faster than an EP3 on track. This is proven many times despite internet comments.
I had an FN2 and have had extensive use of an EP3, they are both very good fun.
Im not sure i'd spend that much on either however, my FN2 was bought for 3k and didnt cost me a penny when I owned it.

I agree the FN2 is a good car for that price. I'd have another for that price, if it suited my needs.
I'm not sure about any models LSD? Is that a Mugen or something?
Certain late models had an LSD, I think from late 2009 onwards. I'm not sure about any models LSD? Is that a Mugen or something?
I had an FN2, decent car, I had a bad example. Parts can be expensive - e.g. no pattern spec exhaust, so a back section was £500. I had a seized caliper, replacing caliper and dong front discs and pads was £550. The ride on the 19" Rage alloys is appalling, plus the tyres are expensive (I paid £160 a corner) and the diamond cut alloys aren't durable and are expensive to repair (£150 a corner). Would recommend smaller wheels. Lots out there will have been poorly treated, so you need to find a good example.
Overall I liked it, but you have to drive it hard to get much out of it, and if you do the fuel economy is dreadful. If you don't the fuel economy is okay, but it isn't too quick if you don't drive it hard. I averaged 27mpg.

Where did you find one so cheap? 70k mileage examples are around £5k all over AutoTrader atleast since I've been looking.
Thanks for the advice though!
Just search autotrader for civic type r gt and use a price filter. Thanks for the advice though!
Just did one now for less than 4k and got a few pages worth of ads. Some rotters but some nice ones too

I'd take a megane R26 or Focus ST over either
What makes you say that? The Megane's handling is on a totally different level and they have an LSD as standard as well as lovely Recaro seats. Again a remap alone will take them to 260bhp.
Make sure you test drive a Focus ST, Megane RS and Civic Type R before you pick any. Personally, after a go in each, I knew I wanted the 5 cylinder car so spent quite some time finding the right one. Over 2 years on, still love it, still puts a smile on my face down a B road, been utterly reliable as well.
I think the FN2 is underrated - especially at its current price.
Great engine, decent interior (seats made by Recaro, but not branded as such, AFAIK).
Great reliability and longevity. No turbo or associated gubbins to worry about.
Fold flat seats give a best in class load space.
Decently quick. Decent steer. Styling subjective - but I like it.
GT model has all the mod cons like auto wipers, auto lights, AC, Cruise etc.

Had an FN2 for 6 years and didn't cost me a penny apart from servicing and consumables. Dad's bought the 2.2 at the same time and has only had to pay for an aircon compressor (other than servicing and consumables) in 10 years at 160k miles. I'd say the civics are good cars if you get a good one like we both did you'll do well.
At the time was tempted by the Focus ST but if fuel costs are a consideration I'd stay away.

Completely agree about the practical element, I moved house using it as a van and on 3 occasions four adults went away for a week in it. Great engine, decent interior (seats made by Recaro, but not branded as such, AFAIK).

Interior always felt special compared to other hot hatches.
