2016 XF 2.0D 180 Reliability v 2009 XF 2.7D
Discussion
I've owned my 09 XF 2.7D Premium Luxury since nearly new and have enjoyed totally trouble free motoring. I've never had any problems and have only ever needed to change the tyres, brakes and oil. With nearly 80k miles it still drives like new. However, I'm aware the car is getting on now, it's by far the oldest car I've ever run and arguably I'm sitting on a timebomb in that inevitably it's almost bound to play up at some stage as it gets older and older.
I'm therefore considering a 2016/17 XF 2.0D 180. That said, I'm a bit concerned about swapping my trouble free car for one with potential problems. I read in today's Autocar that the new shape XF is the lowest ranked car of its class in reliability surveys and that were many recalls including oil leaks, engine cut outs, cracked sills etc.
Is the XF 180 a reliable car and is there anything I should check for? I'm planning to buy an ex lease 40 - 50k miler at auction so won't have a warranty.
I was initially concerned about the smoothness of the 4 cylinder engine too - is it as smooth as the 6 cylinder 2.7? I've been toying with the idea of one of the last 2014 3 litre old shape XFs.
In a nutshell, do XF 180 owners think I should change my trusty old 2.7 for one? Or would I be better off getting a last of the line 3.0?
Thanks in advance

Most of the issues I have heard with the X260 are relating to the infotainment system.
Even here, JLR are very good with releasing software updates for the infotainment so as long as its up to date it should be fine.I have the latest update on my F-type, which seems to be bug-free.

If they have the larger InControl Touch Pro the software can be updated to the latest release and the infotainment issues disappear. I then makes it a pretty good system.
Sorry I don't buy it. I have an X250 XFR-S and I'm on many Jaguar groups absolutely filled with people complaining about crashes and issues. Even the latest 19a version doesn't appear to fix things fully, in fact when v19 was released JLR pulled is sharpish as there were issues with it. v19 was supposed to fix the issue everyone with v18 had.
I had a 58 plate 2.7, and apart from the driver's window packing up, it too was just consumables. I then moved to an 11 plate 3.0. The S. What a car. 50 to the gallon on the m-way, 60 in under 6, and so, so smooth, even riding on 20's. It did like to use tyres, though. Also, at just over 100k the inlet manifold cracked. The car was out of warranty by then, but jag still coughed up 50% and gave me a courtesy car. If its reliability and smoothness you want, look for the last of the first shape 3.0d's.

I know quite a few owners of early X250s that have done just that, upgraded to late model X250s and not the X260. Plastic manifold and intercoolers are a crap design and often break though.

I feel the OP will be disapointed if moving from an X250/251 1st Gen XF to the new, post 2015 X260 XF.
I like Jag, and don't want to do them down, but the X260 does seem to have odd issues almost all to do with the electronics.
I wouldn't touch one that didn't have the InControl Touch Pro (the bigger screen and virtual instruments). I have had many of the simpler ones on loan, and the system just isn't that good. The ICTP is worlds apart.
The so called 'infotainment' is good, but the problem is the little bugs can be a major problem. I have an odd one at the moment where there seems to be some significant lag. I don't care that much if just changing a radio channel - but it occasionally shows delayed video from the parking cameras. Can be quite interesting seeing something on the screen that has already gone past.
I am on V18 something, but with the previous car went through a whole load of versions. Some of the issues are not just the software. Some are the hardware. Two different cars with the same software have performed differently. The software is supposed to be updateable over the air... mine says no updates are available - but we know that V19 is out.
Though I love my Jags, and oddly my XF, I don't think I would recommend buying an X260 out of warranty. You would think that once it is sorted, it would stay sorted, but I am not so sure. Don't get me wrong - nothing has left me stuck at the side of the road - just loads of niggles with the 'toys'.
I was going to swap the XF (that was bought back) for an XJ - but Jag couldn't supply me with a petrol version.
Niggles with ICTP ruined my journey to FoS yesterday. The OPs post made me wish I still had my ten year old SV8.
Many thanks for all the replies, they are very much appreciated. Funnily enough, when I initially thought of changing, I wasn't that keen on the X260 purely because it's a 4 cylinder (I haven't heard great things about the 6 cylinder 300S engine and they are also a bit higher priced than I was intending to spend) but now it seems that there also a few potential issues with the 2.0d X260. 16 plates actually seem very good value compared to a new one but maybe these issues are bringing residuals down. I had a brief look at a Mercedes E220D of the same vintage and that cost a lot more than an equivalent XF.
I've been very lucky with my current XF as having no warranty has made absolutely no difference as nothing has ever gone wrong with it! So it would be especially annoying to change to a much newer car and then have to fork out for repairs and niggles.
I definitely think my best plan is to go for a 2013 - 2015 X250. I'm quite tempted by a 275 S but is there really much advantage of getting the S over the 240bhp version? The S tends to cost a fair bit more, especially in Portfolio guise.
Thanks again

The facelift x250 (2012+) I believe had a lot of improvements made (seats improved, cooled seats system changed, dpf relocated to reduce short trip issues, crankshaft sleeves revised to prevent slip and subsequent crankshaft problems etc) and that would be the one I would go for. Portfolio will guarantee the excellent Meridian Surround system rather than the lower powered but still very good standard Meridian plus it has all the toys. I've noticed some Premium Luxury ones have been spec'd up though. Thanks again
With the 'S' it's not so much the power but the torque which will be noticeable. It's an extra 100Nm of torque but I think the dampeners may be adaptive (not 100% sure about this) so I would assume rather expensive to replace over standard.
Only downside to the X260 is that it's euro 5 if that matters. The 3.0d V6 also has the excellent ZF8 transmission.
Two things that really annoy me with the newer XF. Firstly the sat nav is terrible, even if I use it on a route I know well, it wants to take me off the main road and down a country lane for some reason. Secondly the clock and its inability to keep time, apparently it’s related to the stop/start, in that every time the car restarts the clock loses a second. There is allegedly a fix for this but the dealer didn’t know anything about it when the car was last serviced.
Sadly, herself loves Jags and won’t drive anything else.
