Audi R8 V10 / V8?
Discussion
I'm thinking of buying an R8 convertible MANUAL (with the gated shifter) for summer. Been looking at the market over a few months and it seems like one could buy either, run it for 5k or so, and sell it for literally the same price if one bought the right spec/condition. Like all my belongings I will use cash so there is no debt charge.
Which leads to...which to buy? At low mileage (like 30k) there's literally £3k difference between V10 and V8 models.
OK so V10 obvious choice right? Well I'm thinking maybe not.
- V8 slower, so can drive harder on the same roads.
- consensus is v8 actually sound better?
- V10 is supposed to be harder, firmer ride, not necessarily what I'm looking for.
- V10's have LED headlights that are, by consensus on HID-Planet, inferior to xenon projectors.
- V8 cheaper to insure, tax, fuel, etc.
Thoughts? How bad is scuttle shake on these convertibles? Coupe better?
Going to look at test drives etc some time next week. Thanks!

V8 is dog slow, V10 much faster & sounds great as well. You want the ceramic brakes too, fantastic stopping power. Manual box as well
V8 dog slow ... Really!!! I had a V8 for a few years, ran it on the Goodwood circuit. From the last corner half way down the straight in the wet got up to 140.Great car, great noise.... The only problem with the V8 is it uses oil. I had to put half a litre every thousand miles in it.

I've no direct experience of either, however it'd be the V8 that I would go for.
It's an example of a car that's comes in a bit of a "Goldilocks" spec, where everything is just right .... power, weight, noise, running costs, handling, and even the simple and clean styling.
When the R8 first came out, at about the same price point as a well specced 911 Carrera (or at least not much more), it was a breath of fresh air. It was relatively affordable, or attainable with some calculated sacrifices in a few years, however has grown in performance and cost to pull it away from the "normal" buyer.
The original launch spec V8 manual is where its at!!

I have driven both while I worked for a supercar company.
V10 for sure.
For normal driving/cruising both do it well. Open them up and very noticeable. The v8 isn’t dog slow but once you drive the v10 the v8 is disappointing.
V10 sounds way louder and IMO the v8 exhaust looks pathetic.

If that doesn't make you want a V10 I don't know what will.
Don't watch the one of the V10 R8 giving birth to an RS3. That's weird. Yet strangely emotional.

I'll be looking for a convertible junior supercar/fast sports next summer and am enjoying the research stage.
The R8 V10 is current top of the list and the V8 doesn't get a look in for me. Was was never a fan of the "ring it's neck" school of performance and I understand these V8s lack low end torque, I'd sooner be holding it back, so to speak than ragging it to find it's sweet spot. I believe the V8 is well balanced but if we're loping the the roof off the balance argument becomes moot. V10 with after market exhaust for me, just want decent S troics to drop to about 60k and be able to have a few to chose from which might be early next year imo. (There is the odd one at that price but I'd like a few more to choose from)

That's your opinion and of course you are entitled to it, but surely part of the fun is keeping a car "on cam" as it were and working hard to keep it there, especially if the engine responds well to it. That's not to say there isn't a time and a place for lolloping, easy, almost lazy performance, but I would have thought with a car like this wringing its neck would be part of the fun.The R8 V10 is current top of the list and the V8 doesn't get a look in for me. I know I posted that V10 video, but to be honest I wouldn't turn a V8 down. That would be silly.

I wouldnt call them dog slow, just not as fast as stuff is nowadays and perhaps doesnt live up to the promise the looks make you expect, drove one and it felt a bit flat low down but once it was spinning it went quite well.It will struggle with remapped Golf R's but thats a hollow victory, like outwitting a dog with a magic trick, R8 is a mid engined er, (I know I cant say supercar without a 15 page thread) pretty special piece of kit, and though a Golf R is nice, its a hot hatch. It still does 100 mph in 9.9 seconds, so will match an M140i, unless its been remapped
