Big, fast, SUV - under £10k

After exposing my shame (liking a Cayenne turbo) on the 1-5k barge thread, I realised that for some reason I feel like owning a huge fast SUV, at least for a while.

Current car is a V10 S6 estate, so I'm mostly used to stupid garage bills, although even I don't fancy the FFRR king of bork.

Current ideas are:

Cayenne Turbo S
Q7 4.2 TDI

MPG is irrelevant as I don't drive many miles and the current V10 is hardly frugal.

Any ideas, or tales of woe, much appreciated

Standard Jeep 5.7 is only 7sec 0-60, so not really that quick

The SRT8 seems pleasantly bonkers, if more than a bit agricultural on the inside. Not sure if I'd want one that's spent it's life on the Bute coast though...

I'd rather get to 60 in 7s in a petrol v8 than in 6.4s in a diesel v8

The 4.5 Cayenne Turbos can be troublesome, so I'd go for a GTS:

That GTS is helluva car for 10k. An acquired taste but that's a lot of performance and practicality in something that looks expensive.

I wouldn't discount a FFRR due to reliability and then consider a q7! I have had 2 friends with q7s (3.0 &4.2)and a fair few with FFRR 3.6tdv8's who were running them at the same time. The Q7's were much much less reliable than the FFRR! One cost as much to keep on the road for 2 years as it cost to buy and that was with free labour from his brother and discount on parts from audi! The range rovers did have a few issues but nothing that stopped them actually working like the audi's.

I had the same choice around 18 months ago and went with an X5 4.8 V8. I've averaged 17mpg but as I only do 6000 miles a year it doesn't bother me too much.

I'm going to be selling mine soon as I fancy something newer but if you do look at an X5 of this age you have to check a few things have been looked at by previous owners.

In the 18 months I've had my X5 I have (all under BMW warranty as the car was 59k when I bought it and only 65k miles now):

brand new gearbox (£7500 invoice from BMW!)
4 suspension airbags
2 front struts
air compresser
air lines
alternator
coolant tank & hoses replaced

They're great cars but it seems 9/10 of them will have issues with the air suspension…unless it has recently been refreshed and from looking around it seems a few cars have had gearbox issues so I'm glad BMW fitted a new box to mine a few months ago.

I had the same urge 3 years ago. I ended up buying a 2003 Mercedes Ml55. £4K of risk / fun.

It's 350bhp, all leather, everything electric, 20" alloys, sports exhaust, even had a private plate.

I thought I would `scratch` the v8 itch for a year, however 3/4 years on Ive still got it and love it. Its London emission zone happy, it's 290 road tax. I see between 7 - 21mpg.

love the noise, love the height, can be qwerky. Took me a year to iron out rattles.

Love it. Worth 3K now, so 3/4 years of motoring for 1K.

Fast too, considering it's a 2ton lump of iron. Can surprise a few cars.

Prepare yourself for the ...."What's the fuel like?" or " I bet you spend lots of fuel ?" remarks.

Don't rule out a supercharged FFRR until you've driven one. Mine, if you stick it in Sport and bury the throttle, is comically fast. Still makes me laugh how something that big and square can get down the road so quickly.

LR so a few faster ones. RRS and Discoveries both come with hefty V8's in don't they? The RRS' are getting worryingly cheap now too in diseasel guise.

Agreed. If you like the Cayenne (and the OP does) it looks the preferred option to me and will certainly be the best to drive.

Chipping a large diesel is probably the way to go.

Cayenne gts looks interesting, would prefer a turbo for the comic speed, but spending its purchase price every year or so fixing it isn't attractive.

Q7 like the pointless size and decent pace with a little remap, but like my S6 I'd guess the bork + Audi tax is not pleasant.

FFRR - 4.2 not really that quick, dash looks like a Halfords bargain bin and the breaking down... I dont think so.
