Porsche Cayman 981 running costs
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm nearing the point where I'm going to buy my first ever weekend car. I've test driven the following:
The Cayman seemed to have a better sound, felt a little nicer on the road and I think will hold it's value a little better (but IMO doesn't look as stunning as the F-Type).
Between the manual and the PDK, whilst I know the PDK is an excellent automatic, I just preferred the manual as I feel like I'm not fully in control of the car with an automatic.
I'm still yet to find a manual Cayman S with all the options that I want and that is within my budget, so I've disregarded this from my search.
Between the two anyway, I'm pretty settled on a 2.7l 981 Cayman.
Can anyone advise on what sort of running costs I might expect to have on ~2014 Cayman 981 with 20k-30k miles on the clock?
Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether you are wishing to run it the OPC way or via independent garages without the OPC warranty... the difference over a few years could easily run into a few £000
All the below figures are from memory...
Major service ever 4 years = £1k+
Minor service every 2 years = £550+
Annual inspection = £100 (only those years where there are no services)
OPC Warranty lasting 2 years = £1600+
Tyres = £500 a pair for the rears / £400+ a pair for the fronts (P zeros N rated to comply with the warranty)
Alignment = £100 (budget for this once a year if you want things to remain 'tight')
I currently run a 2013 2.7 981 PDK Boxster, just about to turn over to 50k miles. I set aside £3k a year just to be safe and expect to run it for as long as it fits. I expect at the next service it will need rear discs & pads so budgeting around £600+ for that job.
Owned almost four years now. Apart from a couple of minor niggles my car has been faultless but I do run it with the OPC warranty. Plenty of info in the main Porsche forum.

I’ve had a 2014 boxster s3.4 since April 2018 and so far I had a failed solenoid for the filler cap which cost about £150 and that’s it in 15 months. It had the 4 year service just before I bought it and so I need a 6 year service next March. It sailed through both Mots although I haven’t extended the warranty and am now self insuring. Just turned 20k miles.
Given I own a 2.7 cayman manual (2015) I can talk from experience.
It’s not slow. It’s not eye straining may fast but if you value a deeper connection than outright speed it’s a wonderful thing. If you want “fast” a Golf R is a better car.
For me I wanted driver involvement and as much of an analogue experience as I could with a relatively modern car and I get that in spades.
It’s too early for me to talk about maintenance but I’m running without OPC warranty and did my due diligence on common failures. I thinks as safe as it gets with a manual 981. I accept it won’t be a cheap car to run long term and I’m ok with that. It also shouldn’t make me bankrupt.
OP I had the same decision and came to the same conclusion. With a fruity exhaust it’s a lovely car to one. Good luck finding the right car for you.

I must admit, I do want something fast, but equally I want something that has an awesome sound and looks gorgeous. I want to be able to come out of the house and think 'wow that's a beautiful car'. I'm also pretty keen on getting the PSE if I can.
As it stands, I can't realisitically afford all three so I guess I've been happy to compromise on the speed.
I'd probably need to save for another 6 months - 1 year before I could get what I really want. (Maybe that's the best option?
)I ran one in lieu of a company car (981 2.7 Cayman PDK) and it was surprisingly frugal over the 24,000 miles I did in 9 months. Fuel consumption was 40 mpg on motorways and never dipped below mid 20's even over the Alps. I'd go outside the dealer network with a manual but not a PDK. Probably one of the most efficient ways to go Porsche motoring.
I have big issue with the gearing however that's for another thread perhaps.
