What do I want?

I find myself in a predicament: job sees me commuting in via motorway followed by London driving (non- ULEZ). i do c. 15k/yr. I get 45p/mile for business use but no car allowance until next year.
I used to buy whatever i fancied at the time but now using my car everyday I find myself struggling to settle for anything. I recently bought a golf 1.6tdi its very good on the motorway, does 60mpg BUT it lacks any character what so ever and i find the chair uncomfortable.
my ideal criteria:
auto
30mpg+ on a run
quick-ish (golf feels slow)
a decent steer
good on the motorway
In my searches it seems to be mainly Hot hatches, BMW's and Merc's that are catching my eye but i do have concerns over german reliability.
I've given myself a few options:
1.) keep the golf and buy a street triple.
2.) spend 5k (cash) on something fun and forget a few ideal criteria
3.) spend c.15k (bank loan) on a 3 yr/old motor like a 320d M-sport
4.) spend c.15k on whatever car i like the most and enjoy it for a year before company allowance dictates something like option 3.

Quick, 30 mpg +, looks great (IMO) and I don't think that engine has any major issues but maybe get a warranty for peace of mind.
