BMW F10 181BHP 4DR ECO DIESEL
Discussion
HI guys
i have been looking for a 2011 - onwards f10, i do alot of motorway miles 25k + per year, some of the cars i have seen have 150k miles, i have read alot of horror story's about the timing chains etc, i have asked a few if the timing chains / guides have been replaced, ones who have replied have just said no paperwork of any work being carried out.
Any advise from owners on here? or should i look for another diesel , i was drawn to the eco diesel with the £30 road tax and up to 70mpg not sure how accurate that is should see 55mpg easily i would guess if not the listed figure
thanks

Currently have a 2012 320d msport so same engine
Averaging 44mpg over 4000 miles which is a mix of driving
best average was last week on a late night trip to the airport with an average over 120 miles of 56mpg
As far as I am aware BMW changed the design that caused the issue with the timing chain in 2008 so it should be a problem for the F10

I had a 2011 F11 which had 130k on the odometer when I sold it, no chain issues.... 42 long term mpg calculated on fuel app as opposed to the optimistic obc.
I would recommend oil & filter changes every 10k to ensure longevity of the engine and components as opposed to the 'long life' service intervals.
cheers,
Chris

The N47 (2.0D) engine has had well documented issues and was given a Technical update to take it to N47T but they do still happen and definitely did on 2008 models.

I’d suggest finding out whether engine code is N47 or N47T and then checking for a good SH with regular oil changes and good MOT history. I can do a spec check if required or use the following:
To get VIN - http://ows-cdn.tecdoc.net/exide/home.jsp?server=7&... and use IE VRM GB with reg
To get spec sheet use VIN here - https://decoder.bvzine.com/

Regarding MPG, I had a new 2012 F11 (the touring) 520d Auto, I also did 25k a year at the time and a lot of motorway miles.
I averaged 52MPG long term (worked brim to brim) but the OBC claimed about 55MPG.
Shorter journeys would return about 45MPG, longer journeys at 70MPH, high 50’s.
Note that I did hardly any town driving. When I did go into town, it used to drink a lot. Big heavy car and town work don’t really work.
Good luck.

just to add my experience of the F10 520d. i had an 2014 SE model from new, ran it for 2 years and 19K miles, average calculated mpg over the 2 years was 45mpg. Higher mpg in the low to mid 50s was easily achievable on a decent motorway run.
Personally, I loved the car and it ranks as one of the best all round car I've owned, even though it was a diesel. I had zero issues in the 2 years I owned it.
I'm considering getting out the PCP cycle once my currunt 340i gets to break even point, by buying an older car like a F10 or F11 520d, and interested to know how owners are getting on with examples with 100K plus miles and associated costs. I understand the earlier engines can have timing chain issues, whilst the 2014 LCi models were supposed to have revised something or other to address this?

62 plate F11 on 165K miles, owned 4 years and from 90K miles
New DMF and as out , clutch at about 105K miles
New rear suspension airbags and because I did not change imediately replacement pump.
Otherwise just tyres, disks , pads etc.
New condensor (recall) EGR no problem
Computer says Av 49mpg
