From Golf MK6 to Golf MK7 whose done it ?
Discussion
I currently have a 2012 62 plate golf MK6 match and have recently been looking at 65 plate golf mk7 GTs. Has anyone ever made a change and was there much of a difference ? As my current car is a euro 5 I want to change it before there’s a load of media coverage about the emission zones and the values of the older diesels plummet.
I viewed a 65 plate MK7 but never went for it because it had rust in the bottom of the sill (is this a common problem). I have been told the paintwork is soft so I was wondering if after a few years it’ll end up looking a Ford Focus with sill paint peel and rust.
The vehicle I am going for will be a manual and will have 50k on it.

I nearly did, I went from MK5 to MK7, (MK6 is more or less an updated 5).
I went from 1.9 TDI Match to 1.6 TDI Match, both manuals, so equivalent spec. Although its been a while, I remember the older car felt a little more chuckable, and a bit faster (1.9 105 probably had a few more HP than stated, 1.6 105 definitely doesn't), but the new car feels easier to drive, and a lot more modern with a proper touch screen and electronic handbrake. You get a lot more kit in the newer car, I find the adaptive cruise and hill-hold particularly useful with day to day driving. I think VAG dragged their feet with the Euro 5 to 6 update, meaning some 65 plate cars might still be 5, so I would key in the plate of whichever car you're interested in into the ULEZ checker. Mines a 64 plate so still Euro 5. No rust on mine at all (I didn't think anything rusted nowadays without major paint damage), but I do get slightly damp rear footwells when it rains. After the non-VW dealer failed to fix it, I now use one of those moisture absorbing bags which works ok.
I really like the car, and I couldn't see myself getting anything else in the class. When I look to upgrade I'll probably get a petrol MK7.5 (finances permitting).

Went from 6>7, found the 7 generally better. Build quality seemed to go downhill from 5>6 a bit & 7 was noticeably better than 6, 7 roomier inside, has more toys as standard & is more comfortable / smoother on the road.
Water coming in from the rear door membranes on the Mk6 & Mk7 seems to be a known feature (check for water sitting on the plastic inner sill trim that covers the edge of the carpet).
