I currently drive a MK7 Fiesta ST and it's been great fun. However I have owned it from new (2015) and am quite bored of it now. Originally I planned to modify it to be more powerful but have decided against it. I have approximately 10k to spend on something else.

Have previously owned a lot of hot hatches, a MK1 MX5 and an M3 (E36). All good cars in their own ways but I don't want to go back to any of them now. I would rather not get a new car on a lease/PCP this time, as I think more fun is to be had in an older car. Also, nothing new really sparks my interest. Whatever I do get, it would be nice if it's faster than the Fiesta. I think RWD or AWD would be a nice change too after so long with a FWD car.

In terms of usage - I do about 10 miles a day (commuting) and 2-3 longer trips each year (about 500 mile round trips) so MPG isn't really a huge priority. Single figures would be a concern though! I also do not want a convertible again. If it could be reasonably reliable with as few trips to the garage as possible that would help, as it's my only car. Another option is that I keep the Fiesta for daily duties and spend £5k or so on a second, more fun car.

Not really sure what to buy. There's a lot of choice at this price point! Perhaps something Japanese? Any help appreciated.

Can they be improved with a few mods?

They can - but why bother? Fairly ugly, basic but reasonably fast car at the time, but yes you could spend £,£££s upgrading brakes, suspension, wheels, performance, exhaust, induction, interior, seats, etc. And even when you've done all that its still narrow bodied compared to the STi.

There are better base cars to start with.
