2 cars, super practical and super fun, £30-33k for both
Discussion
Hi all
I'm thinking of changing up my car situation at the moment. Currently, I have a 2011 X5 40d as my daily and a TVR Tuscan as my fun car. The X5 is getting to the point where I'd like to change it for something different, and although I love the Tuscan with a passion, I'm at the point with a 1 year old and heavy work load that I don't have the time to work on it and do the things it deserves. Yes I could keep it and improve it slowly, mechanically it is sorted but needs some cosmetic work, interior trim etc.
I'd like to change both cars, I need a large practical family car with back seats big enough to fit a large car seat without having to move the passenger front seat forwards. Also needs to be able to carry a lot as we often drive to family on the continent for weeks at a time. The X5 size fits the bill perfectly so I need something at least as capacious as that, but doesn't have to be an SUV. I don't mind a saloon or estate but I hated the 2014 Audi A6 estate I had so preferably not that.
For the second car, I'm open to anything, but needs to be fast, preferably a nice place to be inside.
For Car A, I'd also like it to be reasonably comfortable on long journeys but would like to have a bit of grunt behind it. I was looking along the Ines of Cayenne Turbo mk1, but probably too old and expensive to run. Fuel economy is not the main factor because apart from the few continental drives I do, all other journeys are short local drives due to being home based for work.
For Car B, I was looking at a 63 AMG of some sort, or maybe a Maserati but very much open to suggestions. I don't want anything too small (Elise etc) as I'm not small and if I get into an Elise I'm staying in it forever!
I reckon the TVR is worth about 22k and the X5 I'd probably get maybe 13-14k. I'd like to keep a little money back so im looking at spending 30k on both but can push it a little if needed.
What are your thoughts?!

I would take something like this for the hauling
Mercedes Benz E350 Estate
together with one of these, depending on preferences (I would take the Boxster
)
C63 Coupe
Boxster S Manual
Z4M Roadster
SLK55

Good idea on the E Class
Not too keen on the other one except the C63 AMG, that was on my list but not sure I'd want 2 mercs. Although the C63 is great, id like to try going down the route of something like the TVR, but less "fragile". I don't mind work, or working on it myself occasionally, but maybe something a little more sharp, does that make sense?!

I do like that XJ and 4200 combo.
The Z4M is good, but I've had 7 or 8 BMWs in a row and I don't particularly want another one right now. I'd like to try some others.
Maserati is a little more exotic which is good, guess it won't be as much of a drivers car as the TVR? But then what would be?

What about a Skoda Superb 3.6 V6? There's 2 on AT atm, although a fairly big price disparity between them. Will be large, comfortable, reliable and 4 wheel drive. Also has some pace and a nice V6 motor.

That leaves you over £20k to play with. Personally I'd go for something like a Porsche 911. I think something with 4 seats will see more use as your kiddo gets bigger and ideally something fairly reliable because you haven't got time to be tinkering.

Thoughts on a Granturismo for the second car?
If you're after a car that is an event and still manages to be practical then not much compares IMHO. A bit big to be throwing around B roads, but then I imagine the Tuscan isn't exactly suited to that either and at least you would get to use the GT?Only issue will be budget, you really want to get into a 4.7S if possible but that's not going to leave a lot left for Car 1..
ETA - Yep, £30k for a nice one with minimal mileage. Just get a snotter for daily duties?

It is indeed a great combo.....although I have the TVR as well so most bases covered The Z4M is good, but I've had 7 or 8 BMWs in a row and I don't particularly want another one right now. I'd like to try some others.

I'm comfortably under £40k spend for all 3 cars.
Agreed that the Tuscan is not as much of a B road king as others but it's very close, it's an event to drive every time, it's super fast but you don't even need to be going fast to get that feeling. I'm in 2 minds about selling it, it's a car I've always wanted and managed to get but probably just at the wrong time in life, when life is just so full on that it doesn't get the attention it deserves. And while I could just take it to a garage for all it's stuff, that is not really what I wanted from a TVR, I love the oily bits.
So that's why im looking to get something where getting dirty is not an expectation, not saying these other cars don't need work but I wouldn't feel bad for not getting out and working on them.
As for the Granturismo, not being a B road killer is not a bad thing, I drive to the continent often and occasionally without the family so it would probably be a great Autobahn cruiser. But you're right, 4.7 is out my budget so it would have to be a 4.2.
The idea of getting something like a Superb for the main car is not a bad idea, but the wife does like to be in a bit of luxury (as do I) and this will be the primary car for driving to the continent so needs to be a nice place to be. I would take an older E class over a newer Superb I think

It would need to be a 4.7 for me if looking at the GT. The GT is a very big and heavy car and needs the 4.7 to get going IMHO. The 4200 & GS were a smaller lighter car so the circa 395bhp is fine in those. The same with the QP's as a 4.2 feels slow and it needs the 4.7 really.
Believe it or not the GT is a big car and pretty much a QP! It dwarfs a 4200 or GS in comparison.
The GS prices have softened a bit recently and many around £20k and some less now. The 4200's are plenty cheaper still.
Fire me over your Tuscan details and some pics as I might be interested possibly. I have been looking to stick to a Rover V8 based TVR but who knows....it might tickle my fancy.
I'll give you a nice Chimaera and an Alfa GT 3.2 V6 Busso in return if you like

Have a look at a superb. In my opinion much nicer inside than an older e class (I guess it depends on your definition of older).I get ferried about in e classes occasionally with work from about 15 years old to right up to date. I really don't know what the fuss is about. The styling isn't anything special inside (the older ones haven't aged well imho) the ride isn't that good and they are not that quiet.
To be fair they do seem to be very hard wearing and reliable but so dull.

losing a tvr needs to be balanced by something of equal weight or you will be forever wishing you had kept it
Very wise words and It took me years to get over my TVR...because every car I had after it just didn't live up to it in terms of the power to weight/performance/noise and sense of occasion. They certainly take some beating that is for sure. Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
