Does the 350z drink that badly?

Hello all,

Another car i've had on my potential next car list for a while is the Nissan 350z. Fantastic looking and performing cars for the money in my opinion, such as the one below. (They can be found cheaper but this is low miles with the nismo kit on)

My question however relates to MPG. I have read horror stories of people getting 15 when driving relatively tame which seems insane to me, with others saying you can get high 20's which i would be able to deal with. Which is the correct figure here? Also, is there any other major maintenance apart from rear tyres?

It’s a big old petrol engine so I wouldn’t expect it to hit 30mpg unless you were cruising on a motorway for an extended trip. We have a 1.6 turbo merc petrol which is a fairly modern engine, round the doors it’s 30mpg tops driven gently, I’d expect something much lower for a 350z.

I would say low to mid 20's mpg wise overall. Obviously it depends how you use it and I only use my 370Z occasionally and it is showing 22 mpg currently.

I drove it on a long run(90 miles each way) a couple of Sundays ago and it was surprisingly frugal looking at the range when I fueled up versus when I got home. Obviously town work will kill the mpg though.

Lovely cars for me and I'm a big fan of the 350Z.

20-25 mpg in mine, averaged 21 in the year and a bit I had it.
It was not terribly quick and not great in the corners, but I really liked it.
Surprised to see how much they're going for now - sold my 2007 in 2012 for £8,000. I suspect tax is a bit steep now too - it was £400 pa then.

what sort of use do you intend and what is your driving style like?


Goggle says 17-31 for City/Highway (Imperial) and combined of just over 20mpg.

I'd have thought if you plan to run one, budgeting for 20-25mpg would be sensible and anything over this would be a bonus, but mostly on attainable when cruising and not really enjoying the performance.

For heavy city use, or loud and lariy fun driving (with lots of blips of the throttle and holding the revs), then sub 20 really has to be it.

They're starting to go up in value, I want one before its out of budget.

At 15k miles a year I’d save two grand a year on fuel and get a 330d personally

Just a heads up. For that sort of distance that is likely to cost you a little over £4000/year and £335/month in fuel.

I've tried running a thirsty daily twice in the past X5 V8 4.8iS/E92 V8 M3 and it hurts to be fair. I still like fuel guzzlers though but I decided to buy my 370Z as a weekend/occasional car so it doesn't feel like it hurts as much that way(not driven it for over a week though so I end up missing driving it!!). Tax is still a kick in the teeth at £575 though!

It is and I've had a 330d. I think that if you can afford it then do it because you will enjoy every drive of the 350Z.

Think mine averaged 19mpg on the trip computer. But that included a lot of town driving.

First of all around town MPG doesn’t matter, I don’t understand why it would. On a run it will do mid to late 20’s so just weigh up if you can afford/justify it.

I’ve mostly had cars that like a drink. The way I justify it is many people I know spend more on fags and booze whilst owning humdrum cars, and I don’t smoke or drink!

I ran a Rev-up for a few months and an HR for a few days and low 20s was where it was at for me.

If you can get your head round the fuel economy not being great, the 350 is a great car for doing 15k a year in - very comfortable but also quite entertaining in the bends. It does of course make a great noise too.

Not really. Those 350z’s are cheap for a reason, they aren’t very good. A 330d isn’t the pinnicale of automotive fun but if your budget is in 350z territory I’d wager the vast annual running costs will start to grate fairly quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised if a 330d is a faster and better handling car 90% of the time.

Like all cars they will need consumables changed now and again, like front tyres, brake pads and discs, filters, and the occasional oil change wouldn't go amiss especially if you plan to be doing 15k miles a year

In the not too distant future, if given a choice what car would people prefer? A 350z or a 330d?

A 330d doesnt even come on the radar to be fair.

Fire up a 350z and it will put a smile on your face...but do the same in a 330d and be ready for a world of disappointment. Don't get me wrong I like the 330d(had one for 6 years)...but exciting and enjoyable to drive...not a chance.

You buy a 330d to pound the motorway in relative comfort whilst offering reasonable fuel economy imo, but you buy a 350z to put a smile on your face because you enjoy driving for me...and that is the difference.
