Big Estates Merc v BMW

Hello.

I'm looking at improving family transportation by going down the large estate route. Looking at 3 models around the 20-22K mark.

2014/5 530D or 535D
2016/7 E220d

I'm edging toward the more powerful BMWs - any thoughts or anyone been through the same?

Any reason you arent comparing the BMW with a higher powered Mercedes?

I had the previous model S212 E220 diesel for 4 years and wished I'd changed for a higher powered version like an E350 instead of a CLS.

A wonderfully comfortable car that swallowed a ridiculous amount of cargo, and I never had any problems with it, it was very hard to fault IMO.

yeah - I'm not seeing any E350d in my price range unfortunately. I'm looking for under 40K miles and they're starting at 28K at this point.

22k would get you into a nice V90, which is a lovely way to pile on the miles.

Check if that age BMW still has rear suspension airbag issues. Can cost a lot if you take back to BMW.

Try not getting too hung up on the 40k limit. You’d probably enjoy the larger engine motor with 60k for the same (or less) money.

I'd agree on the basis that I've traded 2 E Class estates in recent years at between 40-50k miles, and at that point they had just had tyres, brake discs and pads, and a major service including auto transmission fluid. Someone was getting cars that needed no big expenditure for quite some time. I really should learn just to keep them.....

Wow, thanks for your time in your responses/PMs.

Didn't know about the air suspension issue on the F11. Look pricey to replace at main dealer, and relatively straight forward for the home or local mechanic. I'd been trying to find cars with VDC all round, but these appear flipping rare at this price point, either that or traders don't shout about it on the adverts.

I've seen 2 lovely 530d Luxury that I'm going to see this Saturday - coming in at 19K.

Jags latest breed just don't do it for me.

Just had a look around a v90 and really like it. With a family on board safety has become the new sexy so I'm throwing this into the mix now. The modern looks of it are spot on.
