stymied - 5 years of premium car tax on use cars

Don’t buy a car that would attract such a tax then.
I bought my car in Feb2016, just before the tax came into effect. There was a sweet spot between EU6 start and that April 2016 tax, and diesel doubts had pushed discounts to a reasonable level, and thus a £42-45 list price car could be had for decent money.

There really is only one answer if you really don't want to pay the premium tax, I admit it's not helpful but you either get the car you want & pay or you get something not as nice.

I know it's the obvious but you knew that when you wrote your post.

However, rest easy. The premium tax isn't for five years.

It's for 5 years after the first year - so actually it's six years!
Unless the new car has been taxed then cashed in within the first 12 months, in which case it may be as little as 5 years 1 month.
