VW Golf 1.4 TSI GT Engine Issues?

Hi,

First time poster, currently looking into buying a 2014-2016 VW Golf GT 1.4 TSI (150 Bhp) with around 20-30k miles and wanted to know what people thought about the engine as from my reading I believe it is twin charged, is it the same engine from what was in the VW Polo 1.4, Fabia etc?

Im scared as what google brings out about the car because its a relatively nice drive and the mpg figures are attracting me, what do people think on here?

The 1.4 twin charged VW engine is riddled with issues, so best to avoid.

1.4 TFSI and 1.5 TFSI engines being the ones to have (the former being slightly more reliable than the latter)

Lots of threads about issues with the 1.5 and particularly the manual. VAG aware but no fix as yet.

I could be wrong, but I also thought I'd read that the 'real world' mpg figures are wildly different to the claimed figures, too.

I seem to think it came up in a test I saw with regard to the the relative economy compared to the Polo GTI of the time.

For that age of Golf you're looking at the MK7 which doesn't come with the twincharged engine

If it is the 1.4 that isn't the twin-charged one then I'd highly recommend it. Had that engine in an A3 I had and it was great, so much so that I'll be getting another (or a Leon) as soon as I'm able to

A colleague of mine had a nearly new one and it was forever back at VW dealer to have engine issues fixed. The head refitted was one of them.

Are these engines really more faulty than others or do we hear about it more given the sheer volume of them on our roads in so many different models?

Be careful with the 1.5 TSi. It has issues with a flat spot that makes driving it smoothly from standstill very difficult. Affects DSG and manual but apparently has different issues with different VW Group cars, presumably due mostly to the applied map. Some reportedly have it from cold, others warm, mine has it all the time and it is complete PITA. I have it in an Octavia and Skoda currently have no fix. Just an open case number.

Other than that it's a good engine (in 150 BHP form, where I average about 45 on a decent run). Sounds like a washing machine on spin when you get the revs up.

I believe the 1.4Tsi engine from around 2013 onwards was a cambelt avoiding the previous up to 2012 engines common camchain issues. As far as I know the camchain was the most common problem.

I had a 2012 Octavia from 9 months old to 6 years 60k miles a 1.4Tsi , turbo but not twincharged. It developed a rattle possibly camchain related not long before I sold it to a dealer despite oil changes every 10k miles.

When they are working they are great engines. I've got the 150PS version in my 2018 Superb and get high 40s mpg doing around 75mph on the motorway. Over 50mpg driving a bit slower. Easily powerful enough for the Superb so should be nice in a smaller car.
