I've an easy journey to work, mostly national speed limit and motorway, consisting of 20 miles.

I'm looking for something that'll easily achieve 50 mpg+ and won't fall apart (hard, I know at this price point I suspect) or cost the earth to keep going. I don't need anything large and ideally something that's not been to the moon and back.

So far I've narrowed it down to a Polo TDI

Audi A2 TDI (a few decent on ebay)

Yaris Diesel

Any other shouts?

I do t think this end of the market is as much of a gamble as people make out but... Spend half as much for less of the worry of destroying/depreciating a car.

Mass produced, pre-dpf, pre common rail diesel with manual gearbox.
