Must have:

Compact dimensions (narrow) with 4 doors, for tight city parking
Room for 4-5
Auto box is a must
Large windows for airy interior and good visibility for the kids
Petrol engine witha bit of pep

Very nice to have:

Higher driving position
Sliding doors
Panoramic roof
A bit of style / luxury

Good luck with that ! Sliding doors puts you in van derived territory, that then rules out petrol, luxury

I would say VW UP but the auto box is rubbish so that only leaves a Smart ForFour.

Mazda 5 has sliding doors, maybe a bit too large and not keen on the interior.

So did the older C Max but again its not a city car, Neither is the VW Caddy, Pug 1007, Transit Tourneo, Mercedes Viano ..... Berligo, Doblo, ......

Honda Jazz, Honda FR-V, Fiat Multipla, Nissan Note, Ford CMAX, Dacia Duster, Renault Kangoo, Citroen Berlingo........

There’s a load of choice out there, those are just a few I’ve pulled out of my a&5e while on the throne.

Sliding doors tend to be on the larger MPV’s so may fall foul of the ‘small car’ criteria.

I think the only small car with sliding doors is the Peugeot 1008. I would also normally suggest the VW Up / Skoda Citigo / Seat Mii but as already said, the auto versions are not very good.

Ford B-Max, no longer made however should be able to pick up a relatively new used one, come in auto, have sliding rear doors and a higher driving position and relatively compact dimensions.

The Jazz is an impressive product, but it only comes with a CVT box...not trying to be too picky here, but I truly hate those things. We live in an area with some hills and inclines, and when giving it some juice the sound of these things is torturous.

What you want is a Honda Freed, try finding one from a grey importer.
Doubt you will get a pano roof but everything else is there.
