So My glorious £500 stbox that gave me 11k miles in 3 month period has just been taken off the road due to brake failure.

(not worth fixing as the car is an cat s mk5 golf with a 1.4 engine and a list of small issues that add up to about a grand to fix.)

Looking at 2 possible replacements on the classifieds currently.

1. A 2009 mk6 golf with the 1.4 tsi engine it's got just under 100k miles and part service history.

2. A 2010 skoda superb with the 1.9 tdi engine (105bhp).

I know they are both massively underpowered but I've been driving for just over a year and they are two of my best options as I don't want anything smaller than I golf becuase i drive from England to Scotland regularly and do a fair amount of miles.

The insurance price difference is negligible about £100 cheaper per year for the skoda.

Sorry for the extremely long and boring post. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

Edit: the reason I'm looking at these two instead of the more powerful varirents is because even for a 2.0 tdi I get stupid quotes for over 5k per yer as I'm 18 years old.

The 1.9 TDI lump isn't the most refined, but they do seem to run to intergalactic mileages without significant fettling.

The original Superb is a cracking car, too.

If you're doing nearly 4,000 miles a month, you'd be better off with something bigger, comfy and super reliable. Something like an Avensis or an Accord perhaps. Plenty of toys and cheap to put right if they ever go wrong, which they won't.

Definitely the Skoda out of the two.

Ideal place to sit on your England-Scotland trips, 1.9 TDI goes on forever assuming a decent maintenance schedule.

The 2 are not in the same league. If you want space and comfort then is superb every time.
