I'm looking for a car for my days off - b roads, occasional track days and probably a few longer trips with my wife (NC500 type thing).
It'll go alongside a V50 T5.

Obviously the answer is MX5 or 172/182 but I just wonder what else I should think of.

I'm thinking lightweight, 6-8 seconds, great feel and something I can tinker with. Rust is probably a bit much for me at the moment.

3k is probably the optimum budget but I can stretch. I'd quite like to be able to take my bicycle too; dont mind if it's on the roof/back or in the boot. Luggage for 2 for a weekend is a must.

I think you’ve already answered your own question there. Clio 172/182 for sure!

Took mine for a B road blast last night, nowt more fun for the price. Also fits all your other criteria too.

Has to be MX-5 really.

You could look at MK3 MR-2 or maybe MG TF but I think you would still find a nice MX-5 is a better option than both

A BMW Z4 (preferably with a straight 6 engine) might fit the bill, or possibly a Merc SLK.

Or if you want the bike on the roof or in the car maybe a 3 Series 325ti Compact would work - not quite as light but I had one for 3 years and loved it. If you can find one a Merc C-Class Sport Coupe 320 or 350 would be similar. Stretching your budget you might be able to find an E87 BMW 130i - but you do get 0-62 in 6.1 seconds!

If you aren't too bothered about fuel consumption how about a Mazda RX-8 - they reportedly handle really well. You just need to find one that is mechanically sound, and pre 06 plate to avoid £500+ a year road tax!
