A female friend has been wanting to upgrade her A4 Avant to a 4x4

After asking her male friends and going around in circles she bought a Cayenne - and hates it, too big / heavy.

She lives in the countryside on narrow lanes, has an older dog that has to get in the back.

Really "premium" version of a Rav4 would be ideal - is there such a thing ?

Posh area, public school... image matters

Unfortunately she's dismissed Freelander, Disco, Evoke for various reasons

My initial thoughts are Q3 / Q5 but "image" SUVs aren't my thing

£20k ish

Evoque does fit the bill, not sure why dismissed!

Anyway...
BMW X1?
Mini Countryman?

GLC's go for about that price. They look tiny in the US but pretty large on UK roads. My brother was shopping for one these past few weeks for his expecting wife. I came along to talk him out of it and convince them to get a CLS shooting brake.

As above, Evoque was the first car I thought of before reading the thread. Surely ticks all the boxes?

If not then X1 or Countryman are good shouts.

Or perhaps a Lexus RX? If that’s too big then a Lexus NX might just about be in budget?

Buy an old Defender. Then they'll really look posh.

Tiguan comes in 4x4 i think, or is that not premium enough?

If a Cayenne's too big then surely a Macan would be the logical answer?

Some kind of Subaru? Outback or Legacy wagon, Forester maybe. I always think they're appealingly classless.

Apart from the obvious fact that she have test driven the Cayenne before buying. There is little in the way of "premium" compact 4x4's.

Discovery Sport/Evoque probably the closest. But the reality is, they are pretty big cars these days. As will anything else be.

Jeep Renegade is probably the most 'compact', but these are still almost as big as a Discovery 1.

Maybe the new Jimny would be fitting, certainly has the cool factor and while it won't be luxury like the Porsche, it still has all the mod cons. A 3 door Wrangler would be of simlialr ilk.

Actually I'm going to throw in the new Mazda CX-30. Great looking thing and only a fraction over budget. I think they are taking orders now.

Premium Rav4?

I'd say one of these ticks the boxes, the fit & finish is superb whilst the drivetrain is bulletproof, the hard part will be finding one.

I'm laughing at the VW and Mazda suggestions! She'd probably rather walk. Or take the Cayenne.
