Clubman JCW 2019 - PCP/Cash Purchase or Lease
Discussion
Am i going mad? I now have two options.
Option A - lease a clubman JCW for £303 pm plus £2727 upfront (35 + 9) which equates to £13,700 with admin fees. 8k miles per year. Added options: 19 inch JCW wheels, metallic paint. Comfort Plus Pack comes as standard. Thought about Harmon Kardon spakers, HUD and sunroof but decided against this on a lease.
Option B - negotiated a 19.9% discount to list price on the exact same model by bouncing different dealers off each other using carwow as a benchmark (13.9% highest discount there, so an additional 5%) if i buy on PCP. I'll just close the PCP off a week later. Total price with the metallic paint and 19 inch wheels but without sunroof, kardon speakers or HUD would be £29,420 OTR price. With the options it adds £1,520
So comparing the lease to the outright purchase, it would be 46.5% of discounted list price or 37.5% of RRP over 3 years.
Questions:
1. Am i going mad to consider the purchase over the lease? it's a pretty amazing discount and ive been quoted from every dealer in the country by now
2. Am i going mad to buy the new JCW when it's just been released (could there be problems yet to surface or have they ironed out most of these by now given the Clubman mk3 has been out since 2016)
3. How would the JCW be likely to hold its value over 3 years? Better or worse than the lease above and/or relative to a standard cooper S?
4. Would it make sense to include those options I've excluded above for residual/re-sale value? sunroof, kardon speakers and HUD?
I test drove it on Tuesday and i must say, the new 305bhp jcw felt brilliant. But then the Cooper S sport hatch I have now doesnt exactly feel slow - it's very nippy. The only thing I preferred on my current Cooper S Sport 19 plate is that the hatch handling still "feels" better than the Clubman but then I had the sales guy in the car with me so I couldnt really drive spiritedly like I do in the hatch.
Basically im smitten with the Clubman JCW but I wonder if I'm not making a big mistake and should just lease it instead? Or even go for something else like the countryman JCW instead (test driving on Friday though im not expecting much given the countryman S sport drive is awful)

They both seem a good price but ultimately do you plan on keeping the car longer than 3 years?
Personally I would not add non essential options to a brand new car I was paying for as 10k worth of options is going to make very little difference come resale time in 3-4 years, it might make it easier to sell but ultimately its not going to be worth significantly more than those without the options. On a lease I would be less bothered as long as I could afford the monthly as you will be giving the car back anyway.
We have a 2018 Clubman MCS and since they switched to the B series turbo engines, they have been reliable for the most part, i.e. no known major issues that I am aware of and the 2015 cars could easily have 70k+ miles on them by now.
If you are not planning on keeping longer than 3 years, I would opt for the lease and add any options you can afford but that's just my opinion.
The reviews on the latest Clubman JCW seem positive, if I could swap ours for the latest one I would but we have a couple of years left on the PCP so will have to wait, although I have my eye on an M135i next.

I don't mind buying it and I have the cash to do so but I just dont want to buy if i'm going to lose substantially more on resale than I would just handing it back in 3 years through a lease. If it's the same or better buying it outright, I'll go with that route since it gives me the option of keeping the car if I decide I want to. So i suppose the questions are:
1. Does a JCW hold its value more than a standard cooper S?
2. Does it make more sense to buy the JCW or lease it? i.e. do JCWs hold their value better than Cooper S'?
3. If buying, does it make sense to add those couple of options (HUD display, sunroof, harman kardon speakers) or will i regret not having them if i come to sell the car / keep the car forever?
Also, out of curiosity, why would you get the JCW over the Cooper S you have at the moment? Have you test driven one yet and if so how does it compare to your clubman S?
I have a R55 JCW Clubman and the values of those are strong VS normal models to be fair
I presume the non JCW new clubman is FWD & lower power so it a fair bit differnt, i do think RRP are massivly infalted though so the monthly look like a good deal not suprised your getting offfered a chunk off as otherwise it wouild loose 15k in a year or so

Ha, yes I think it will lose more than what you will pay in leasing it, however if you do intend to keep it after the 3 year period then I would bank loan it. That’s assuming if you went down the pcp route then purchased it at the end but used a loan to fund the pcp.
My r55 was 26k list, I paid 13k from a mini dealer when it was 33 months old, the wife’s f57 was 33k list, we paid 17k for it at 22 months old from a Suzuki dealer.
