Need a second car again and on the lookout for something interest that will retain its value.

Have a bit of a history with Clios, having had a 172 Cup, a 197 FF and we'd a 200 Cup too.

These two have piqued my interest.

First one is a 197 F1 Team, so gets the cup suspension and the Recaros. Low miles, enthusiast owned and has the KTec exhaust and a few tasteful mods. Priced at £5,500 which is probably top dollar.

Second is a 2011 200 Silverstone GP. Again this one has the cup suspension and Recaros.

Assuming both arent going to be able to be moved much in price, which would be the better ownership prospect? Probably would be aiming to keep it a year to 2 years minimum and i'd like to recover as much of my capital as possible come resale time....

I'm in Northern Ireland so options are somewhat limited.

You can always fly over & open up your options & then enjoy a road trip home, I've done similar in reverse, I'd probably go for the 197 as it looks like the nicer car & I'm not the biggest fan of the look of the facelift.

Yes, funnily I am over in north London every week so maybe thinking of buying over there and either bringing it home myself or getting it delivered home.

Not the end of the world to drive to holyhead over to dublin then drive north.

R27 in liquid yellow would be my choice. Failing that would be a 200 Cup with Recaros in Alien Green.

The 200 is the better car, lots of detail changes which add up to a big improvement.

I doubt you’ll lose a huge amount on either but they are common cars with some way to drop before any of them will reach that “rare” status. It’s only just starting to happen to the best examples of the previous generation - apart from the trophy obviously

Yes, we live close to the border so I think over to dublin and up is quicker (and maybe cheaper) than up to belfast and down.

Would be something to check out if I go down that route relative to the specifics

I think thats the crux of it. Both cars will still lose some value, though probably not much in the grand scheme of things. They're still too far away from "rare" status.

How much can you really lose on a cheap private sale hatch, a couple of bags of sand in 2 years at worst?

Yes, thats the conclusion i am drawing. I'm going to look at the 200 on Tuesday (assuming its still available). An initial chat with the seller is that there isnt much room for movement, however i'd really like that car around the mid 6's rather than a number starting with a seven.

My gut feel is the bulk of that - if not all of it - could be returned in a years time if needs be.

We already have a depreciating new car - a 2019 M140i - at the front door and we've come out of a recent cycle of having two depreciating cars at the door, down to just needing one over the last year or so.

My plan / hope would be to run something "interesting" with little or no depreciation as a second car. I've had success with that a couple of years ago when i ran a Boxster for a year (bought for £6750, sold for £6850 a year later) and a Volvo T5 (Bought for £2,400, sold for £2,300 a year later) (both with minimal running costs over the year), and i'd like to repeat that if possible.

I dont mind losing a bit over a year or two, but i dont want to be losing a lot of money.

The silver car looks really tidy but will be difficult to get a trader to discount to under £7k but bidding him £6.5k would be a good starting point.

Agreed. Hes selling it for the owner. So getting significant movement on that price will depend on the owner being prepared to move on their price. Hes advertising it with an aftermarket warranty, etc, which i'd be happy enougt to forego to help move on the price.

My thinking is if i pitch £6,500 and the owner moves a bit, the seller moves a bit and i move a bit, i might get it for £6,750.

Of interest, the blue 197 has now dropped to £4950 on another site. I might try to work that in as a negotiating point. Of these two cars i can now buy the blue one for probably £4,800 cash or less, which puts an awful lot of air between it and this 200. Not the owner & sellers problem per se, but it may help to demonstrate that to sell the car a movement on price may be required.

Heres the 197 at £4950

Theres also a 2010 JCW about as well for similar money and any amount of Civic Type R GTs, so i'm not short of options.

The advantage of the JCW is its far more tunable in terms of BHP

Yes! But not to any of these.

I have an aim of not losing any money on a car that i need for six months (for no other reason than i want to try) and i concluded all of these would lead to a loss if needed to be sold in 6 months, and could cost a bit in the meantime.

So, today i bought a 2013 new model Focus ST-2 in Panther Black. Bought it from a trade auction at £800 below CAP trade price. Needs a bit of a clean up but plenty of headroom in terms of cost versus resale price down the line.

Picking it up tomorrow.

I think you would lose less and move the st on much quicker than the renaults, the JCW would have been the n14 ....

Thanks, yes, well pleased with it. Better condition than i was expecting for to be an unprepared trade car bought sight unseen at auction.
