Work colleague wants a car for 3 years.
Discussion
In the UK for 3 years, and wants a car around £5000 that'll be easy to sell on.
Prefers a Golf or Mini Cooper.
Is this possible around this price point?
Quick look on Auto trader and there are 2002 model year Golfs with around 100k miles at that price.
Will they be a world of pain maintenance wise?
Thought that I'd ask you lot as this is a car site. Cheers all.

There are 12 Golfs available with less than 40000 miles on between £4500 and £5000. The newest is a 2011 3 door 1.2.
"Golf" is a pretty broad church, but that one will sell on no problem if he keeps it well and has it serviced correctly.
Cheers. A very quick crap look I know
I know nothing about Golfs. She won't have a credit rating as just arrived in the UK, I guess.
She saw my bike gear and started asking about cars and places to live around London.
No, I don't fancy her lol, and as she's my superior, it might do me well if I give her good advice

Surely offering to take her for a ride is a given?

Ok, let's narrow it down.
On PH there are 33 basic Golfs up to 2012s £4k or less. Most are around 80 to 100k miles.
What kind of possible engine, bodywork, suspension worries could there be?
Looking at one in particular, a 2010 Golf 1.6 diesel, I'm pretty impressed with what a few grand can get you, especially when I think what I spend keeping my owned for 21 years E36 on the road.
Although being that the Golf is diesel, one would have to take into account the extension of the ULEZ come 2021.

All the cars below are good options, if she's your superior maybe take her to a car supermarket that way she can sit in the options & decide for herself then you can help by finding a good example of whatever she decides she wants.

Can I throw a curve ball at you? If she's got a work contract for the 3 years, some finance companies will look at her. Mercedes-Benz Financial Services do (or at least did) lease agreements for people on work contracts. Ping me an email and I'll happily put you on touch with one of the guys in our car team who may be able to help. Total cost may be more than the £5k, but it'll be trouble free motoring whilst she's here
