Private Registration

Not exactly car buying, but :

I want to buy a private registration - and although I have done this in the past, it was a long time ago and I know it can be done electronically now. Most of the private plate companies seem to want you to send in your documents - I don't want to do that, because I know that I can transfer the registration directly via the gov site, and I also don't want to send my V5 to some random.

What I can't figure out is how it works if I want to do it myself. I think I need a certificate of entitlement? The websites don't help much - they seem to almost imply that if they don't transfer it, then it will be put on retention in my name - but wouldn't that mean I have to pay the transfer fee twice - once to get it on retention, and once to put it on the car?

I'm sure somebody must have done this - so how does it work? (And yes, I have searched but couldn't find the answer)

If you buy direct from the DVLA personalised reg site you don't have to send in any docs and the info you provide is going to the DVLA not some unknown party.

Many of the plates they offer to sell are already on retention in someone else’s name. The most secure way to ensure the transfer happens to you is to assign the number to your car. Having an assignee written on a piece of paper isn’t that secure and as such would open up the firm to all sorts of potential claims hence why they ask for documents to assign the plate legally to your car.

Th big firms do this fairly efficiently.

Ah well, too late now - I've ordered it and said I will do the transfer myself.

With the DVLA allowing online transfer to your car do the reg companies insist on posting hard copy docs or can they email you?

In effect I suppose I'm asking is it possible to buy and use a reg same day?

At least the one I used didn't seem to give me an option of having it emailed to me. No idea when it will actually turn up.....

However, one of the reasons I wanted to do the transfer myself is because at least I have control over WHEN it happens. Years ago, I transferred my private reg from one car to another - I informed the insurers, and literally the next day I had an accident in the car I'd transferred the registration to.

I just don't want any "window" where the reg has been transferred, and I haven't received the new docs / am driving on the wrong plates. I know it's probably OK, but it's just not worth the grief.

Bought one on dvla recently and found it very fast compared to the last time 9 years ago. Paperwork in a couple of days. Think I could have assigned it to a car there and then but wanted the v5 through first

Got the certificate through today, so did the transfer online and fitted the plates.

Pleasantly surprised that neither the insurer or Vodafone tracker asked for an admin charge to change the registration.
