Well maybe you need an E46 Compact then!

I had a 320td many years ago that averaged 47.8 mpg over 40+K miles, but more recently I had a 325ti for 20+K miles that managed over 32 mpg - and was much more fun.

And when I sold my 325ti last year it was at the bottom of your budget.
