What large 4wd car

I currently have a Land Rover discovery sport which I have been reasonably happy with given the level of toys and performance that it has. It is now coming up to 3 years old and given the reliability issues it feels like a change is due. I would also like a car with a larger boot.

Criteria is as follows

Must be four-wheel-drive
Up to 2 years old - could flex this
Up to £40,000 - slight flex
Estate or SUV - I have a large dog
Petrol or diesel - ideally 30+ mpg
Sub 8 secs to 60 -
decent specification - The discovery has heated screen and wheel

I’ve been considering the Land Rover discovery but I am concerned of reliability. I’ve also looked at the Volvo XC 60 and XC 90 ( plus v60 or v90) and I’ve also looked at the Volkswagen toerag.

And SUV is probably preferable as they are easier to navigate down the country lanes where I live but I’m open to suggestions.

I’m really struggling to round out on what to go for, thoughts?

We bought a velar about 6 months ago which is a great car, however if my wife hadn’t been such a badge snob we would’ve had a Skoda Kodiaq which is half the price and more luggage room. I also suspect it would be more reliable. Your budget will get you in the top of the range VRS. I also considered a Superb 4x4 estate but we needed extra ground clearance as we often drive in deep snow.

I had considered (and still am) the Skoda

I'll look at the volvo in that spec. Estate is easier for the dog to get into but not as good visibility on the country lanes

I had an Audi A6 all road before the Land Rover. Wouldn't rule one or but probably prefer a change

The Jeep is interesting. I keep looking at these each time I buy a car...then choose something else. Anyone run one and have any real world feedback?

Q7 50 TDi or 3.0 TDi if a bit older. Preferably with air suspension and definitely with Virtual Cockpit.

The exterior sits somewhere between utilitarian and a bit ugly, but the interior quality is fantastic and the refinement beats any other SUV I've been in hands down.

I've supplied a fair Grand Cherokees, the cars themselves are good & reliable but some of the dealers aren't great, personally I'd be taking a good look at the Levante at this price point.

Some great suggestions. Thank you everyone for taking the time.

I'm off to look at Audi and VW options today plus I will have a look at the Merc E class estate option as well if I get time.

I'll also check out the Skoda next week. We have owned a fabia, Octavia and Superb in the past so the superb or Kodiaq are decent choices.

I also need to look for a Maserati to view. Not sure I've ever seen one (which appeals) but given the recommendation above I'll check it out before I make a final choice.

Well, After a bit of looking around I’ve gone for a discovery HSE LUX. Slight budget creep but got a decent deal.

Liked the Velar but the boot just wasn’t big enough. Hopefully it we’ll be more reliable than my disco sport!
