Comfortable large load lugger

Hi,

Looking for a second car just to use for motorway duties and lugging loads about for my business. Criteria are nice interior, comfortable, reasonable pace, mpg and reliability.

I think I have narrowed it down to either an E61 530d or a W211 320CDI. Both around 2007ish, just over the 100k mark and budget approx 4.5k.

Which would offer the most trouble free motoring and be less likely to throw up a big bill?

The car that ticks those boxes is a Ford Mondeo.

I was tempted by the 2.5t Mondeo. Looks nice inside and big load area.

Don't like the exterior look though, and the fuel economy isn't great. Would like less than 8s to 60 which the diesel version wont do either.

What size loads are you carrying?

Have you considered a van? Ford custom/vivaro/traffic etc are all good motorway vehicles and drive really well. Not quite as fast as a car but I find my van to be very comfy due to the driving position. The high viewing platform is an added bonus

Volvo, anything else is folly.

I wouldn't advise the Barge 1-5 thread as we will recommend a 2001 S600 (V12 natch') or something else that isn't what you are looking for.

I am sure a V70 / Mondeo / Accord / Van could suit.

Not looking at those at present though!

Will forge forward with the Merc 320CDI idea as have a couple of test drives / viewings.

Will maybe look at the C320 as I like the package.

320CDI is decent bet but remember the basic car came out in 2002 (assuming you're looking at a 211) and it does feel quite and old design these days to drive. Mondeo actually feels a considerably more modern car to drive for the money.
