Daily/ House Renovations/ Tow vehicle £2k/£2.5k
Discussion
I am looking to buy a house in the not so distant future and I am thinking to buy a second vehicle as we plan to renovate the house ourselves as much as possible. I drive a mk4 Supra and the girlfriend a Mito Cloverleaf so hardly practical cars.
I need something to do the following and all for £2k ish

the front runner at the moment is a Shogun 3.2 DI-D although have previously been looking at Audi A6 All Roads

- Go to IKEA ,
- Pick up second hand "stuff"
- To be able to tow a motorbike trailer
- Go to the tip without a license / form
- Be reliable

I contemplated an old Citroen Berlingo or Peugeot Partner when we did something similar-ish last year. Didn’t do it in the end as I ended up with a “spare” car (Mazda 3) after I took on a leased car.
So, yes to the idea of a mobile skip. Just have a look at van-like cars which, dilute to their body nature can transport lots but unlike vans don’t fall foul of the rules on commercial vehicles when you visit the tip.

You will get loads more in a Shogun type vehicle than an estate car, mainly because the boot opening is the restrictive part of estate cars often knobbled by the hinges in the roof and the sill. Having owned a 5dr Shogun (and several estate cars 9-5 etc), I speak from experience. They are built like tanks, can be expensive if they go wrong, but so can any 'luxury large estate.
My first answer was an A6 as that's what I had while we were doing this house right through and it was great for it. I'd steer clear of the allroad at this end of the market though, unless you have a decent bork fund for the ride height compressor etc. And do NOT buy a multitronic!!!
Just sold on my Legacy estate - definitely not quite so big as an A6, but a much better drive.
I'll also throw the Citroen C5 estate into the mix here as a top value cavernous car... unlike the allroad, get the up-and-downie suspension for full usefulness and ride quality.
Or if you want to throw everything away in return for space, then any big MPV thing, especially with removable seats.

This is good to hear. I like the idea of a 4x4 and since I floated the idea under the GFs nose she seemed to warm to it defblade said:

All useful information when it comes to estates, plus an A6 is another option. Just sold on my Legacy estate - definitely not quite so big as an A6, but a much better drive.

I bought a Merc Vito. Unfortunately I bought a broken one and am still working on it but once it’s done it’ll be perfect. Small for a van so nothing to worry about with any car park height restrictions but big enough to carry most things I’d want to carry and a good towing capacity. Needs to be post 2006 though for a galvanised one.

Legacy estate and v70 are both worth a look too. Both fairly dependable and a reasonable number out there to choose from.
Will look into these, might have convince the GF that the Volvo is a good choice. How reliable is Mercedes ?

Issue with a van is the Tip will want a permit to go through the gate no matter how much crap we do or don't have. Also I don't really want to daily a van, although I wouldn't need to tow as would put the bike in the van
Renault Scenic 1.9 DCI would be perfect for this as the back seats come out. The three back seats are individual, and if you tip them forward and pull the lever underneath they unclip from the floor and can be removed.
Once removed you have similar load space to a van, get a Grand Scenic and you have even more room. My parents have had two of these for exactly this reason and have saved thousands in not having to hire skips.
