Volvo S40 or Mazda 6
Discussion
The S40 and Mazda 6 (not the latest model but version before...2007-2012?) are both on the wishlist for my next car but I'm struggling to decide which to get. I am looking for a practical manual Petrol saloon/hatch that also looks ok too and must be reliable and comfortable.
Honda accords are too rare which drives up the prices on used market for one with reasonable mileage so it leaves the S40 and Mazda 6 as more accessible options.
Never sat in the 6 but reviews seem positive and v practical. I've been passenger in a older diesel S40 and it felt v 'solid' in a reassuring German barge kind of way.
S40 is not so practical and some electrical gremlins previously reported but I like how they look in the sport package (R something). Also the £260 road tax for the S40 2.0 petrol is unfortunate to say the least while the Mazda 6 2.0 petrol dropped to £200 during the 2011/12 run out model so another plus.
Considered estates for both cars but I just don't need that amount of room however I do like how they both look in estate form. Diesel is a no go...I am lucky to hit 5k in a year and it's all short stop start journeys...on weekends only
anything else to consider? Whilst the newer Mazda 6 prices have fallen they look too big IMO and I prefer to buy tried and tested rather than a few years old (referring to the 'skyactiv' engines). I am aiming to get a 2011/12 car so am hoping that rust won't be an issue on those...as earlier versions of both have been afflicted by rust esp the Mazda.
