Simple really in theory but I need a little nudge. I currently daily a e60 520d which to a full 70l odd tank will do 600 miles eveytime give or take. I hate diesel so..
I want a mk5 gti prefer a dsg but manual if I have to. I'm guessing a golf with a 50/55l tank will do 350ish miles to a fill.So roughly in theory if the golf had the same size tank of 70l surly it'll do 450/500 odd miles so in my mind only 100 miles worse off or in paddy land 20 of 30 quid more.
Am I thinking this through correctly

Your BMW is doing 9 miles per litre approx

Well according to Honest John's Real MPG figures, the 520d achieves 43.9 MPG (your figures show about 39mpg). The Golf in GTi form achieves 31.2 MPG so you're looking at an approximate 25% increase in consumption, and slightly less than 25% increase in fuel costs with petrol being a few pennies cheaper.
It depends on the driving you're doing though, diesels and petrols have different strengths. Bear in mind you might also use the power of the GTi more for fun times and the 5er will most probably be much quieter to drive day to day.

Been that this is to replace my daily I am slightly concerned re mileage. The bmw is at maybe €200/250 a month fuel wise. Been ireland diesel is cheaper than petrol. I have a modified r53 as my fun car but it's been a few months since I took it out. I never really kept an eye on mpg but that does taken it easy 300 miles to whatever tank that has.
The mini is heavy on fuel so I'll assume it'll be marginally worse off. I just could not daily drive the mini, to small, hard, noisy, unreliable etc
The golf I would remap maybe intake and exhaust. Low end mods not day and night. Also another issue is we are quite scarce on 99 ron. Mostly 95 which won't help i know

Yes I originally wanted a dsg / 5 door car but I'm not that picky id rather condition over exact spec, Any tips over what I know already or may be overlooking ? Wish me luck. If the above falls through I can look at the below
