it's time to start looking for a first car for my son to learn to drive in. thinking £2,500-£4k range.
Think these days its essential that its a tiny engine running on elastic bands, for insurance purposes?
Not a part of the market I normally look at - any opinion on the VW Up! - Possiblly a polo?
Any thoughts on these - or general advice greatly welcomed

possibly - quite like the look..... just dont know much about them - assume with my first choices you get VW build quality - but Aygo may be an idea - are they ok?

Based on my experience of hunting for first car for stepson around 15 years ago, this advice might be a little out of date, but...

pick a few prospective models, then play with online insurance quote calculators. At the time the Post Office website was good for this and I found that either a '95 Micra or a '96 Corsa were what to aim for. Oddly, quotes for a '96 Micra or a '95 Corsa were significantly more expensive. We bought a '96 Corsa. Times may have changed, but the online nature of quoting probably gives you more opportunity now to discover the sweet spot.

Wikipedia says it's built in Czech Republic alongside the Peugeot and Citroen in a joint venture.

The Aygo and its derivatives are all good options. I think the Up! and it's derivatives are around the 4k mark now (Just seen a Cat N Seat Mii for a little over £2k). Might be worth a look at the Mazda 2 (Mazda Mazda2??) too, the little cute hatch thing, not the awful box from years ago. They're just coming under the 4k mark now. Vauxhall Adam's are around 3k and up.

No idea on the insurance of them all but worth throwing through the price comparison websites.
