Car dealer has registered himself as the new keeper?

Hi,

I bought a new car yesterday, and the car dealer gave me the green "new keeper's details" slip (V5C/2 document). I was able to tax it. He was supposed to have transferred ownership today. He sent me a text with the contents of the email he received from the DVLA, which says "DVLA have been notified electronically that you are now the new keeper of the vehicle Registration Number: (car reg)" along with the transaction ID. However what has me miffed is that he obviously had this sent to himself, since it says "You may wish to print this email confirmation for your records", because I never received an email from the DVLA. He had asked for my email address beforehand, which I gave to him.

I texted him asking about this, but he did not reply, and he didn't answer my follow-up call either. Am I being dumb or is he trying to fk me?

Although you gave him your email address he probably lost/forgot it so just entered his own in order to be able to obtain the notification email.

What are you actually concerned about, as you post is not very clear?

You have the new keeper slip, and you should receive the new V5 from DVLA within the next week or so.

I also presume you also have the invoice / receipt for the purchase, which is the bit that actually confirms your ownership.

Yes I do have the invoice. I guess I'm just being paranoid because it seemed odd that he'd send the email to himself rather than me, and then he didn't reply by text or answer my call after I questioned it.

Well he works Sundays and had called and texted me just a couple hours before with the details, so it's not that. But I get your point. I guess it's nothing.

Ok, I agree I put it the wrong way in the OP. It's not a new car, but a car new to me. As long as I'll be the new owner.

When a dealer brings a used car in to stock via a part exchange, he has to notify the DVLA that he has possession of the car, this takes the previous owners details off the logbook and puts the car in to "trade" it's a limbo state between proper owners it doesn't add their details but the DVLA are aware that the car is at a dealership waiting to be sold, when the car is sold you then take the car out of "Trade" and register the car to the new owner.

You said you have a receipt, so you are the new owner. You are awaiting the registration certificate (V5) from DVLA updated to show you are the registered keeper, and when you do, it will state very clearly ‘THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP’ and underneath ‘It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle’

This is what I suspected might've be the reason for him sending the email to himself rather than me (i.e. registering himself as the new keeper first, before transferring it to me... maybe he hadn't done this yet). But the way he put it to me was that it would be transferred to me today. Do you think this might've been what happened? Thanks for this answer.

There is no benefit to a dealer registering the car in an individuals name.
In Fact there are many drawbacks, least of which is taxing the car.

Don't worry .. just enjoy the car !!!

There's literally no problem here. You're making a scene.

...unless he's a dodgy "tax free home trader" who wants to try to convince HMRC he's just selling personal cars quite rapidly rather than operating a business. By the same token he could also try to argue, "private sale mate, no implied warranties".

You'll know the true position by whether the number of "registered keepers" has, or hasn't, ticked up by one as the car went through his hands.

The DVLA have hugely improved their turn around time for sending V5s out to new keepers so you should get this in about a week or so
