Help.....I have recently been overtaken buy the urge to treat myself to a new car...I recently drove a new fiesta st2 and fell in love with it. The truth is I don't need one and it will probably be used very little. I have a van I use for work which is fine and my wife leases a perfectly good car. I am 53 and justify it to myself by thinking what's the point in working all the time if I can't treat myself. I couldn't afford to buy it outright so it would mean finance though I am comfortable with the repayments. Am I just a 50 something guy wasting money or is it a case of buyers remorse before I have even bought it......your thoughts please

What's the point in spending all that money and depreciation for what is essentially a weekend car / toy.
Based on typical repayments in that price bracket, just get a 15k loan and buy something really interesting as a weekend toy. You'll probably enjoy it more and not get depressed about losing so much money on a new motor.

This - get yourself a Sainsburys loan (others available) at 3% APR and buy a S1 Lotus Elise for £10k. It'll cost you zero in depreciation and maybe (if you're unlucky) ~£1k a year in consumables/repairs - far less than the sum total of the lease payments on the ford shopping trolley.What's the point in spending all that money and depreciation for what is essentially a weekend car / toy.

I like the idea of a lotus or something of that ilk but it would have to live on the drive and more importantly I don't think my other half would like to use it.....regarding depreciation and finance etc my sensible head tells me not to buy anything and make overpayments on the mortgage but what the heck.....

get something a bit more user friendly like a nice MR2 roadster, an S2000 or a V8 S4 cabrio, something for fun that wont break the bank or make you feel guilty Edited by Dave Hedgehog on Tuesday 29th October 17:21

I'm not sure it's the type of car that makes me feel guilty or even the expense more justifying something that I probably won't use that much if I'm honest...Edited by Dave Hedgehog on Tuesday 29th October 17:21

I get the impression the OP isn’t a full blown petrol head and just fancies a treat. An Elise gradually dissolving on his driveway won’t be zero depreciation. Just get it bought OP, they are great little cars and if you can happily afford the payments, you will enjoy the car. If it’s just for the weekend you can probably keep it really nice too and take a 20 year view on it, which then makes it seem far less frivolous!
As above, I’d suggest buy something interesting for the weekend. This could either be a £1500 MR2, or a £15,000 lotus, whatever you’re comfortable with.
I bought a Golf R for 17 grand a while back with a cheap bank loan. I loved the car as a daily driver but I’ve now got a cheap diesel Astra for the daily grind and intend on getting something special for weekends and holidays which won’t cost a fortune in consumables and depreciation. I’m just a lot more comfortable that way and it seems to work for a lot of people.
I couldn’t cherish the Golf as it was in daily use and literally couldn’t keep it clean, and it wasn’t special enough to keep for weekends only.... a bit like the Fiesta might be I reckon.

Have been in an ST with mountune kit and I am surprised at the dislike for them around here. I thought it was very rapid , sticks to the road like a fwd has no business doing, comfy and bizarrely economical. Seems as fast as you could really use on British a roads, could certainly have given my impreza a run for its money and get twice the mpg doing so.
Would you actually go out driving in it though? No point buying one just to sit on the driveway.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.....interesting to hear different opinions........I totally get the guys that suggest something a bit more unusual after all it's a site for car enthusiasts. But it has to live outside and be something my wife might occasionally use or feel she could if she wanted. I have always liked fast Fords...my first car was a mk 2 1300 e Escort bought from my dad not fast but great I then progressed to mk2 rs2000 ......wish I still had it today. Still undecided but thanks for your replies.
