Rav4 2007-08. Petrol or Diesel?

Looking for a winter 4x4 run about and quite like look of these. Max budget 4K. Anyone know if i’d be better off with petrol 2.0 or the 2.2 diesel? I take it the diesel is pre DPF stuff and chain driven? Would be selling it again Feb or so next year. Or should i get a CRV?

Work is around 15 miles each way, rest of the time it will be short journeys for weekly shop, taking stuff to the tip etc.. So I'd prob say quite short.We have an 07 2.2D RAV4.
Aside from a blocked EGR value (which was cleaned out) its been pretty fault less for the past 4 years we've had it.
Pre-DPF, so don't need to worry about that.
Its not most engaging drive, but we've done a fair few 200 odd mile trips with it with both the kids and its been ok.
Economy has averaged around 46mpg.
Not had cause to really test its offroad or snow driving, but all in all its been pretty reasonable.

Thank you for that info mate. I had kind of dismissed the diesel as was wanting a bit of refinement. Can I ask if the 2.2 diesel is quiet enough or is it quite clattery? Its doesn't sound bad to me in the drivers cab/clattery, but you can clearly tell its a diesel.
Ours in the 134BHP model, so its fairly torquey at low revs etc, but clearly doesn't have top end power as it is 'only' 134 BHP.
To be fair my comparison points are both a petrol a V8 TVR Chimaera (Which is has torque, revs and the V8 noise right through the rev range), and an audi A6 with the V6 2.7 biturbo audi- which is very smooth, pulls to the redline, and has buckets of torque acros the rev range- so my expectations in terms of noise and torque and refinement from a 'mere 2.2 diesel' (and not one renowed for performance) were pretty low - its exceeded those, but take it for what it is
Other thing to bear in mind is the gen 3 RAV4 (ie 07/08 and later) have part time 4WD with a viscous diff engaging the rear wheels when required - its not full time 4WD (I believe some of the earlier generations may have been fulltime 4WD.

Get a CR-V 2.2 diesel, ES/EX model, lots of equipment and 45+ mpg. It is quite loud and it isn’t as refined as a petrol but you can make swift progress in one while still averaging 45 mpg, had 3 in my family, all have been faultless apart from one needing a dual mass flywheel, that had 130k miles on it and it was bought cheap.
I’ve driven a petrol Suzuki Grand Vitara which give or take the same weight and power as a RAV 4 and it was terrible, very thirsty and slow.
I heard about the 2.2 diesels Toyota make having problems with the head gasket, I think it’s the 180 bhp one from the Lexus IS220d, read into it before you buy one.

We have had a 2.0 petrol rav4 for about 4 years, its a 2012 but i dont think its much different to the pre facelift age you are looking at. I am not sure if all the petrols are the same but ours has the cvt automatic, overall its a decent car we have had no issues with it. Averages 30 mpg overall, mid 30s on steady long runs. I find it quite uncomfortable on longer runs but my wife loves and and she drives it most. We test drove some diesels but preferred the petrol.
I would go for the petrol model, although owners of the diesel on here are saying they average 45mpg you have to remember yours will 'just' about be getting to normal running temps when you arrive at work, a petrol engine will get to normal running temps quicker so average mpg gap will be reduced,factor in lower cost of petrol v diesel plus purchase cost of a petrol model will most likely be less than a diesel model
