Used SUV suggestions . Budget 14K .

Hi all,

I'm so confused with all the options out there so someone suggested posting on here for advice. I need a SUV that is big enough for a small family and a dog. I do max 8k per year mileage. So far I have looked at CRV , seat ateca . My questions

Petrol or diesel
Newer car under 3 years old like ateca, CRV or Sportage or older premium German like BMW X3 or x1.
Boot space .. how much do you actually need for dog plus family stuff .. we have a Springer spaniel.

Good answer. A lot of people on here will suggest that you can get more space and a bigger boot with an estate car, rather than an SUV, but SUV's win for high seat every time!!

At 8k miles per year, conventional wisdom will tell you to go petrol rather than diesel, but ultimately, it's really up to you.

As for what space you need, only you can really tell that.

Can only suggest you look at a few and see what you like. Mrs FTR and I run a Qashqai and it's fine - just upgraded to the new 1.3 dig-T 140 and it's a significant improvement over the old 1.2. Mazda CX5 is usually well thought of in these discussions.

OH had one as a rental on holiday and hassled me eveyday for 2 years to get one, daughter borrowed it for a weekend away with the baby came back and bought one three days later lol

We liked the Evoque more than (we wanted to and) anything else.

Bought a 5 series touring in the end.

I guess it depends on your mileage pattern, but I would probably go petrol for that low mileage

Do you know what you want from the vehicle?

e.g.

-speed
-fun handling
-luxury interior
-gadgets
-perceived image
-shouty styling
-understated styling
-4wd
-off road ability
-on road ability
-mpg
-residuals
-warranty length


You won't likely get anything to meet all of these, so it's about picking what fits best. And your views on how risk adverse you are, vs which areas you will be happy to concede on.

You could get a brand new MG ZS SUV in budget. A good car by all accounts and reviews, if lacking the driving excitement a little. But in return you'd have a new capable vehicle with a 7 year warranty.

Personally I quite like Jeeps and Land Rovers, but then I like off road ability too. But you'd be needing to look at used examples for this price point.

We have a Sportage GT-Line and we love it. Drives well, practical, well built, lots of standard equipment. The only downside where we live is that the roads are poor with bumps and potholes and the ride is a little harsh on the GT-Line 19" wheels.
